Default Wildfire evacuation

Hello all

Our shop is under level 1 notice... get ready.
Across the street, where my house is, is (as of 1:00 pm pacific time) level 2 notice... be ready to leave with 15 minutes notice. One major fire has possibly crossed a major river (Clackamas) and is about 3 miles from us.

Last night Mary and I helped a car owner rescue 2 collector cars from the level 3 area 7 miles from us... flame front only 1/2 mile from where the cars were.

I will try to keep you posted with any updates.

Dale Newcomb... check in with your status also.

I’m 10 miles south of Oakland.
It’s been 95 to 100 here every day until yesterday.
The whole place is hazy with smoke.
Haven’t seen the sun in two days. Too much smoke Hansen in the air. It’s 65F today.
Too cold to work outside.
Yesterday I read there were some 7,500 individual fires burning here in the state of nonsense.

Hi Karl,
I am sorry to read this. We had it here in Sonoma 2 years ago and again this year.
They stopped it less than 1/4 mile from us. We refused to evacute. I have many friends who lost everything.
Now there are fires burning again here and the smoke is so thick it is like midnight at noon here.
The memories all came back.
I still check the hills every night before bed for any signs of smoke or flames.
This is life changing.
I hope all goes well for you and you are spared.
-Dennis

Sorry to hear this. The tree huggers out there need to learn that it is necessary to cut underbrush to prevent this sort of thing. Stay safe. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

7,500 plus fires, in one state, I am sure were not all started by lightening.
We had lightening about 3 weeks ago but it was also raining at the same time.

The funding to accomplish the underbrush management has been diverted toward "renewables" development for several years now by the Cal 'know-it-alls'. It's also interesting that Oregon has found it 'rational' to send several of it's fire-fighting helicopters to Afghanistan for some reason.

It's been widely reported that the El Dorado fire currently ablaze in SoCal was initiated by an incendiary device set-off by some real genius in dry grass at a "gender reveal" party this past Saturday. DD

There is some speculation that some of the fires here in Oregon are arson related as several started between 0100 and 0500 hours the same day along major roads. Several small towns have been destroyed and at least two people died as a result of the fires. Fortunately we're East of the Cascade mountain range and most but not all of the fires are to the West of them. So far all our friends and family are safe but we're still concerned.

I'm in Southern Oregon, 37 miles above the CA border. Our fires started in the area between 15 and 25 miles North of CA, along I-5, human caused. Most of the small town of Phoenix burnt.

There are now, at least, 2 dead and 600 homes and 100 businesses burnt, many of the homes were mobile homes. It's at 3200 acres and 20% contained. I suspect more dead when they do clean up, as many elderly didn't want to leave their homes and the fire went very fast, through a populated area, with 45 mph winds.

Just got a message from my daughter in Cornelius Oregon and she said the sky is red but the wind has died down so the airborne embers are no longer flying but she said that Monday on their way home from the weekend they drove by the Detroit Lake area and it had burned an entire town to the ground. Sure hope Karl's OK and he can save his home and business.

All of you in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana are in my thoughts and prayers. I volunteered from 1976 thru 1981 to come out and work on the wildfires with the US Forestry Service. When a fire gets a certain size it starts creating its own weather and will turn on a dime its direction. When you hear the news report that firefighters used their fire tent you know they had gone as far as they could and that was last resort. Those tents are like wrapping a potato in tinfoil and sticking it in a 1200 degree oven. Those boots on the fire line are working as long and hard as they can.

I think of you all every day and what you are going through. Hope you are spared and stay out of harms way. Keeping you in my prayers, including rain for you to help stop the spread.

Status update:

Basically no change, the shop is in level 1 (get ready). House is in level 2, with Mary and my son at her parents. Weather is cooler with little wind which will help stall the main fire and help with firefighting efforts. Looks to be the trend through Monday with rain showers predicted Tuesday. So far as near as I can tell fire authorities have been aggressive in setting evacuation levels, which has paid off in no fatalities in our county. Newc checked in with me, he is fine and out of the fire areas.

Yes, Carlin COULD! Turns-out that a 'GR' party is NOT what I first thought, either. It's a party where the new mommy and daddy get all the family and snowflakes together to drink wine and announce whether the new unit (baby) is a girl or a boy. Like ...WGAS? Then they throw some Black Cats out in the weeds and burn California down. There's only one guaranteed way to 'fix' STUPID! DD

I't be a shame if this was on purpose. I'm sure some fires started other then the news related stories. I'm a environmentalist. It will be a long time till the environment will recover or maybe never will, sure hope it does. Sad.

Not everything is about politics for f&ck sake. It's a big deal if the forest of the north west burn off. At least if you want cheap 2x4s from your local hardware store. Not to mention the people it effects. I wish the best for the land!!! They are not making any more of it so cherish what is there for now.

A little advise to those in fire prone areas. If possible try to keep even your project cars licensed and insured. I lost 2 cars in the Paradise fire. One was insured and I was compensated under the auto policy but the other was uninsured and found that my house insurance specifically excluded cars and parts. Also watch out where you park your stuff outside. The 47 in my avatar was a little to close to the house and went up but the white pickup survived, go fiqure?? Had my 31 had been up on wheels I could have rolled it out of the garage to the middle of my driveway.

If at all possible try to keep everything as a "roller". As usual my hindsight is 20-20. Tools tend to be covered so photos of all tools and gear are handy and photos of insured cars are a great help but store off site !!!!!! I had them in the shop Duh. Having been through this I can really feel the pain. Its also a good time to update the coverage on your house as cost per foot prices tend rise after these disasters and when you rebuild an older house you have to bring alot of it up to current codes which can cause real sticker shock. Good luck to all those in harms way

Those who repeat political rhetoric in placing blame for natural disasters should be forgiven, for they know not what they say.

I grew up (in the 50s) just over the hill from Wescott, everybody wanted a Wescott body. At the time, the Wescott name was synonymous with hot rods. Back in the day my nephews "laid up" fiberglass for Dee. One of them has a machine shop just down the road in Estacada. So far he has managed to save his home place and the shop but it's been touch and go.

You ain't been nowhere until you've seen a 100' tall fir tree explode before your very eyes.

Eugene, itself, seems to be ok. Their fire is about 20 miles to the East, along Hwy 20. 15 miles East of Springfield.

Prayers for all you out there in the fire zone. Cars and parts are replaceable but you guys are not! Stay safe!

Thanks to all for your concern. It is incredibly smoky and dark. There was a fire less than 10 miles from us several days ago. Thankfully it was extinguished before it spread out of control. Unfortunately some structures and homes burned. I've been in many smoky campfires in my life but this is like nothing else. There was a young couple from Renton Wa that inherited property in North Central Wa, near Omak. They went to visit the property and got caught in the wildfire. They were found badly burned trying to escape along the Columbia river. Their 1 year old did not survive. I can't imagine...

I can't imagine how the air is in the fire areas, here, in the east, we can't see the sun due to the haze cover in the upper atmosphere!

We could smell the smoke here in Oshkosh a couple days ago.

For you guys in the East, when the particulates fall out, and the ash sticks to your car's paint, it won't just rinse off, you'll need suds and soft towel. Another reason to wear a mask, too.

It has been very apparent in northern Minnesota the last couple of days. We can see the sun, but it looks like a peehole in the snow.

We had lightening about 3 weeks ago but it was also raining at the same time.
News here in Illinois said the other night that they have proof that some of those fires were started on purpose, by arsonists.

I hope they catch those ignorant so-and-so's and hang them from the highest tree, that hasn't burned up

Among all our other difficulties this year, it's important to keep your cool when you hear that sort of news piling on.

The thick smoke haze and the trouble I have breathing has actually got me almost depressed. This morning sitting on the couch silent (rare) my wife asked if I'm ok. I was after we went to the local restaurant and had dinner and a glass of wine. Sometimes you just have to get off the property and push yourself. By the way did I mention the smoke is really, really thick?

Before this gets to far, I think people should know that the "Oregon Catalyst" (sic) is a known conservative blog.

Make your own judgement.

Let's get back to cars.

I'm asking because I do not know the answer, I'm not a body guy (yet).

If the carb catches on fire and burns through the paint on the hood, or brakes catch tire on fire and burns the fenders is it repairable and able to be used again, or has to be replaced?

RAIN! today.

That pretty much removes our house and shop from any major wildfire danger this season.

We are lucky here. Only about 25 houses burnt in the county I am in. In Oregon, nearly 2000 houses were burned, over 1000 of them in two small towns 20 miles north of the California border. The consequences are not done, major issues of flash floods with debris flow into the Clackamas river (33% of water supply in Portland suburbs) and into the Santiam River (state capitol Salem water supply) and across highways in those river corridors.

Most of the fires were started accidentally. There were a couple of arson fires with the arsonists being "nut cases" not affiliated with any organized group. Some confusion came about because of radio traffic talking about the "BLM" setting back fires (a wildfire suppression technique), ignorance showing as in this case "BLM" meant Bureau of Land Management" not the protest movement.

Thank you all for your support

Living in interesting times!

What ever you think of "Oregon Catalyst", what they are posting are mostly, local TV station reports and not slanted opinion.

I'm in that Alemeda fire area (12 miles from it), our fire was arson and has killed people (at least 5-6), 50 missing and destroyed, at least 1000 homes. After that fire started, another guy started a second, in the same area then, 5 miles from me, a third fire was started.

It matters how they are started!
