Starting on Motor
Got the motor into the garage and got a little impatient. I'm waiting on friend to get his fathers hoist to put it on the engine stand, and while I'm waiting, my daughter and I started to do some cleaning. It's not much but it's a start. 50 years of caked on grease and hay dust from the barn, all the bolts came out with not much pressure. Question 1-Do I have to get down to bare metal to re-paint?
Question 2 - Since I'm not going to get this all done at once, what should I coat the parts with so moisture doesn't get the best of them before I break it total down and paint? |

Re: Starting on Motor
Hi Wuudie,
Question #1-yes you more than likely will have to have it hot tanked. The paint needs something to adhere to. If you don't the oil/grease won't give it a good base. If nothing else you can inspect it for cracks afterwards. Question #2-A thin coating of grease/wd-40 or other preservative will work while the parts wait. If they are going to be blasted or hot tanked anyways then a thin coating of rust won't hurt anything. I know some barners have used a preservative to protect parts. Mike

Re: Starting on Motor
I had mine hot tanked at a NAPA machine shop. Some solvents may harm babbit, so be careful there. Others here know much more about that than me.
The cast iron pieces don't rust badly, but do oil the inside of the oil pan and tray, since they are steel. |
