Default Speedo cable

My speedometer works only on occasion. It is rebuilt and when I hooked it up, it worked for a couple of miles - then stopped recording. I pulled the panel and found that the cable was far down in the housing - probably not engaging the driving gear. The cable is original. Could it be too short / worn / other?
Thanks, BW

a couple of things, if its down in the cable and pulled out of the speedo i would say its to short duh lol or is broken and has let the cable slide down in the housing, dont know exactly how long the cable is suspossed to be but others in here can give you that info

Bobster, the repop cable I just aquired came with a "Pill" a short bit to fill in the space in the speedo drive if its one that is drilled deep. I check my fit and the drive end of the cable fit right to the top of the "Key" on the cable end. I could see if the drive was drilled deeper the cable could easily work its way in and pull out of the speedo. I would remove the drive end and slide the cable in and test it to see if it went way too far in to allow sufficient lenght for the cable.
