Re: 1935 Ford V8 Locking Gas caps
Neither the 1935 nor the 1936 gas caps were originally vented. The vented filler neck on the 1936 model took care of the venting. The small tube inside the filler neck was structured to vent and if needed to release overfilled tanks below the topside of the fender. Some with better results than others. The vented cap was for later model Fords.

'35 cap was non vented and in '36 they were vented since Ford went to the elec fuel gauge.

I have a few old atlases. Your first post shows the difference in plates. Makes a difference in vehicle yrs. Plates can be swapped.
https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=180536 Filler tube was for when you filled a tank with gas so air could be relieved. . Last edited by Tinker; 12-22-2019 at 02:11 AM. |

Re: 1935 Ford V8 Locking Gas caps
On some of the caps with 4 screws inside, one screw is to change from non-vented to vented.

Re: 1935 Ford V8 Locking Gas caps
I believe that most if not all gas tank filler necks from 1936 thru early 1939 were vented allowing the use of a non-vented gas cap. During the 1939 model year the filler neck venting was removed necessitating the need for a vented gas cap.
The drawings below show the evolution of the Ford locking gas cap from 4/8/35 thru 3/18/39 when venting was added to the cap. |
