Default '46-'47-'48 Bumpers and Overrider Bars

I'm looking for a pair of front bumper guards and an overrider for my '47 coupe but I'm not exactly sure what I'm hunting. I can't seem to find any good photos.

Below are photos of a '46 and a '48. The '46 is obviously made up of 3 pieces (with a bar below the plate). Was there an overrider option for '46? Is this bar below the tag an option or standard equipment?

I can't tell if the '48 is one piece or made up of 3 pieces. The guards on it almost look like '46 guards. Anyone have better pics of a '47 overrider?

Thanks, Jim

The one on the "48 wagon ia actually a "factory "46 unit. You can tell by the bumper guard style. It is a one piece unit with the stock lower cross bar for the license plate ,which is bolt on.

So.... was there an overrider offered in '47-'48? If so, what did they look like? Were they one piece or 3 pieces?

No Sir, there was none available as a Ford accessory for '47&'48. There was an after market unit available (which would cost you points if your car is judged).

If I remember correctly???? The guards on the tips were called elephant ears & the the center bumper guard ( mine had two knobs on top) were after market made by a company called VanAuken. I doubt if they are still in business, that was many years ago.

I have what I believe are 47 guards from a parts car and wanted to verify year and help Harrison in his search.
Can these be used with the upper or lower cross bar or are these for cars with only the guards?

1947-48 cars were only offered guards. Ford did not make the grille protector type assy. other than the '46 style. I have never seen an after market unit being made for '47-48 either. The '41-'48 EFV8CA book shows it in the accessory section but does'nt specify if approved for use on '47-'48 cars when judging. The grille guard assy for '46 is also being reproduced by Bob Drake.

Hi Harrison,
Your bumper and grille guard discussion caught my attention. I went back to my reference books and Gary in La. is quite correct in his observation. However, I have the bumper guards with the top bar that was on my '48 Ford Woodie. These are the correct original bumper guards listed as an option for 1947-48 Deluxe and Super Deluxe cars. Mine has the top bar and it looks factory. I also have 3 or 4 more of these guards but most appear to be aftermarket or 41 factory Ford. I am not going to use this item on my restoration so if you're interested please let me know here, call me at 802-869-2688, or e-mail me at [email protected]. In defense of the '48 Woodie that you showed, the only correct rear bumper brackets are the narrow '42 style for Woodies as they would clear the tailgate mounted spare tire. The front bumper would have come equipped with the 47-48 style as the pictures that 416Ford posted for you. I think the owner of the Woodie wanted his brackets to match on both ends of his car. I plan to do the same. Hope this helps. Toby

That is a stock 1942-46 front without the license plate bracket.
