Default Alternator

I am going to convert my 52 V8 engine to run on 12 volts. I have found 2 alternators that it looks like I can use. The Powergen which is $370 or one from MACS for $180. Any comments on the differences would be appreciated.

Why spend that kind of money when you can use a Chevy three wire alternator? The bracket comes from Speedway. Here is mine for my 36 (the larger pulley is for the fan). Ed

Ed that's not a large pulley, in fact that's the smallest pulley you can use the OD of the pulley is right out to the fan bolt pattern. Have a 24 stator put in this alternator and it will charge at idle. The voltage regulator controls the 14,2 volt output. G.M.

Because it looks like a chevy alternatorSorry.I had my 6volt converted to 12volt and a new matching regulator for $75.00.

Bill, Sorry I was in a hurry and didn't complete the description. It is a 24 volt stator available from generator shops. I had 2 installed that cost $35.00 each. A friend gave me 2 6 volt POS ground GM alternators that he had on his and his fathers 35 and 36 Fords. They had them on about 2 week and they didn't work as good as the old generators and gave them to me. I put one on and didn't like it either. The only thing I could think of was a larger pulley. Talked to Joe the old owner at Chestnut Hill electric in Akron, Pa and he said a 24 volt stator would increase the voltage at idle and low speeds. I had them done and they worked perfect with small stock pulley. I really didn't like the look of them on my old Fords and built 7 6 volt POS ground alternators in the 39 type generator shells. They have been on and working great for 3 or 4 years. This is not an easy task and takes a lot of machine work. G.M.

Ed's pulley and alternator are fine. It'll charge at less than idle. Fan might be a bit noisy at speed just like the original fan mount generator but otherwise just fine. Quit picking on Ed. 8^)

PS: The smaller the pulley, the faster it'll spin in this case.

"Bout the easiest and most inexpensive alternator going is the GM 10 SI. Can be found in any auto parts store in America for cheap. Came in 37, 55 and 63 amp varieties, and INTERNALLY regulated. ANY GM vehicle from '73 and well into the '80s had one, and some Vettes, Firebirds and others as early as '69. Click link below! DD

Go the three wire. Would have liked a smaller pulley on mine as it just doesn't quite charge at idle..

Alternators on a flathead are ugly.......think of the prom queen with a big hairy wart on her nose.

Smile Re: Alternator

I have fabricated a lot of parts for my '41 pickup even thou I could have bought the items. Such as the bracket that holds the starter to the pan rail, an aluminum collar to hold the steering column in place, a column drop, motor mounts, an aluminum block collar to fasten the throttle pedal to the firewall, various polished aluminum clips, a walnut glove box handle, throttle linkage for the three 97's, walnut spacers under the carbs. All of this was not to save money, but to be involved intimately with my ride and give it a little flair over stock. Some items I bought were expensive and that was OK. Such as a Juliano Banjo steering wheel for $500, a stainless steel gas line with banjo fittings for $400. It all depends on the character of the vehicle. Make your choices based on what style you like.

I see this thread was started in Jan. but just my .02 I installed a Ford alternator from Certified Auto Electric 440-439-1100 in Bedford, OH

Lots of detailed install and wiring instruction, hey guy's why would you put in a GM alt. when there is a Ford option. Scott

The modern GM and the Ford look almost the same. Use what ever is cheaper, they both do the same thing! The GM can be had at almost any part store. Napa always seem to have in stock, and they work great. Just my 2 cents.

To each his own but I am using a Delco (GM) 10 SI 55 amp 3-wire. Works great and charges all the time regardless of rpm. Key: attach sensor wire to solenoid terminal.

Mac has the correct mount and alt. for your 52. Remember the later 8ba mounts which attach to the fan assy. are different than the mounts on earlier cars. Also be sure you get the narrow belt pulley. I installed a 6v alt. from Macs on my 51 and it made a big difference on my lights and the overdrive.
