Rear Axle Seal Removal
I thought that maybe the inner seal was missing but no such luck. I have the outer bearing out and can see that a seal is there, but it needs replacing. Is there a way to get it out without further disassembly? 1922 roadster.
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions. Robert |

Re: Rear Axle Seal Removal
You will need a sleeve puller to get the sleeve out. The seal and washer are bigger than the inner diameter of the same. https://www.modeltford.com/item/2509SP.aspx
Chances are you will need new sleeves too. The come in left and rights.

Re: Rear Axle Seal Removal
I have a sleeve puller and the sleeve is out and I have a new one. When I look in the hole I can see the seal. I have a new silicon type seal but don't see how I can get the old one out.
Thanks, Robert. |

Re: Rear Axle Seal Removal
Bent piece of stiff wire. Slide it between the lip and axle, then work the seal out. What seal is in place now, leather, felt packing or other? If it is leather, the washer is just riding on the outside so should come off easy, there are bent fingers pressing the leather down to the shaft, so you will need to get the wire in a bit further. If felt, just push it in more, there still will be the washer to pull out first.

Re: Rear Axle Seal Removal
I believe it's a rubber/silicon type seal because I can see a thin black ring around the axle. I fear that this will be really hard to get out but I'll give it a try.
Thanks again, Robert. |

Re: Rear Axle Seal Removal
I'm 87 years old and my son-in-law is 63. He helped me (did most of the work) and now no leak.
Thanks, Robert. |
