Default Clutch Adjustment

When my car is in netural with the engine idling and stopped I hear a spinning noise from the throwout bearing area. When I push the clutch in it goes away. I presume this is a clutch adjust using the adjuster below the pedal. What do you think and if this will fix it which direction should the adjustment be made?

Thanks for all comments and help.

Righty tighty,. lefty loosey....FIRST check how much play you have in the pedal, you should have only about 1 inch play.. IF You have a lot more you can make the adjustment with the YOKE under the pedal, take out the cotter, remove the clevis pin, turn to tighten 1/2 revolution at a time,. put back pin and check pedal, that is the best way to do it, if you have a partners it does make it much easier as you don't have to keep coming up from under the car. When done DONT FORGET to place the cotter pin back in the clevis hole!!

What you describe sounds to me like the gears inside your transmission case are spinning when you let out the clutch pedal. They turn even when you are in Neutral.

Check your transmission oil level. Make sure it is the correct thick oil. You may also have a slightly worn bearing in there.

So do I lengthen the trunnion on the yoke to bring the throw out bearing closer to the pressure plate?

When you lightly push the clutch pedal with your fingers, you should have 3/4" to 1" of freeplay. As the disc wears, the freeplay gets less.

If you want to remove freeplay, then you have to shorten the trunion on the threaded link. In other words, remove the pin and turn the link clockwise to thread more link through the trunion.

Sounds like a bad front bearing in the transmission, or the center bearing.

Enquiring minds want to know.

Couldn't it also have been the throw-out bearing with not enough clutch play, therefore the throw-out bearing was engaged at idle?

Not unless the throw out bearing was touching the clutch fingers. If it is not touching it will not be turning.

Also he said it went away when the clutch was pushed in. That means the shaft stopped turning. So it has to be inside the transmission.

Seems likely he got the problem fixed and didn't bother to let anyone know.

Sorry for the confusion fellas, I used this old post that I found when searching for how to adjust the trunnion.

Thanks Tom for the help. A friend that is working on his woody in Florida called me to ask which way to adjust it. He has difficulty in getting down under the car and I could not remember which way to turn it. I just turn the trunnion and if the throw out moves the wrong way, I just get under and turn it the other way. I looked in the service bulletins but all it says is to adjust it. Nothing about which way to turn the trunnion.

Thanks again.

I stand corrected, I just found on page 222 of the service bulletins the answer to my question. I just didn't look hard enough. Thanks again.
