Re: Key stuck in ignition cylinder
I would advise him to call the vendor and hopefully the
vendor could answer that question... .

Re: Key stuck in ignition cylinder
When the key is turned to any position other than the "off" position, it is not supposed to come out. Tell him to turn the key so that the key fob is straight up and down in relation to the top (parallel with the tumbler keeper). Then it will pull out.
If the key will still not come out when the key is turned to the off position, look at the little round pin on top of the lock at the back to see if it is popped up. If it is not, it should be and could possibly be coaxed out by slightly depressing it with an ice pick and releasing. If that little cylinder is stuck, shoot a little WD-40 down the cylinder bore and try again. Last edited by Daves55Sedan; 11-01-2017 at 11:19 PM. |

Re: Key stuck in ignition cylinder
Guess I should add that the little pin inside the cylinder on top of the far end of the lock that I mentioned above has a purpose. Here's how it works.
In order to install the lock in the ignition switch (or in a car door lock sleeve) the key must first be turned to the on or unlock position, then the little pin can be depressed so the lock can be slid into the ignition switch. Then, turn the key off, which releases the pin to pop up into the little hole in the back of the ignition switch housing at the top. That pin holds the lock in the switch so that it doesn't come out. In order to remove a lock from a switch, first turn the key on and depress that little pin down thru the little hole to release the lock from the switch and pull the lock out by pulling on the key fob. Then remove the key from the lock by turning the key "off" which should cause that little pin to pop up automatically. |

Re: Key stuck in ignition cylinder
I have a new Napa switch in my car. If I don't pull it out a little when I turn it off, it can get stuck. Usually a few seconds of wrestling gets it free.

Re: Key stuck in ignition cylinder
Ha that's funny, any old Ford I get in to start if the key is on the left side of the steering I automatically start shaking it while turning. They should have put it in the owners manual.

Re: Key stuck in ignition cylinder
My '55 trunk lock cylinder was so badly worn when I got the car (in 1972) that you had to pull upward on the key while attempting to turn it. The key itself was very badly worn and apparently the tumblers themselves were also. I had oversized keys cut twice and it still requires pulling upward while turning to open. The people who had the car before me must have used the trunk A LOT.

Re: Key stuck in ignition cylinder
The problem started recently and the switch was around $28, not cheap. Eventually it has got to go before I get stuck in BFE with it. Just about anything I have gotten for the car at Napa has turned out to be junk.
