If I remember correctly pushing "Town" or "Country" changed the sensitivity of the reception. Sorry, my instruction manual for the car went down the road when I sold the car.

T & C stands for Town & Country. Probably different sensitivity on the selector bar.

The 57's also had a speed sensitive option - the radio would get louder as the speed picked up.

As I remember the town bar would pick up stations that were strongest in town. country would scan for farther stations and probably weaker signals.

Volumatic Signal-Seek Radio (shown at left) was a new Thunderbird option for 1957. It automatically raised or lowered volume depending on car speed—the ultimate luxury—no more adjusting radio volume at high speeds, then lowering it while stopped! Two controls searched for the next available station, based on signal strength of strong (Town) or weak (Country).

With more AM radio stations in town the car radio needed greater 'selectivity' to help keep their signals from interfering with each other.
Out of town the radio needed more 'sensitivity' to bring in stations farther away.
The 'Town & Country' switch adjusted the internal circuitry as selected.
