Default K code Mustangs

Were the early K code cars with drum brakes delivered without wheel covers on like the early GT350s with steel wheels ?

Not sure why, but I was under the impression that cars were shipped factory-to-dealer with the wheel covers in the trunk, and put on as part of the 'dealer prep' service.

That sounds right because those first few cars shipped to Shelby had no covers but I read they were in the trunk .

I don't believe 65 Shelby's came with any hubcaps. The standard wheel was a 15 inch wheel, which were not available to the regular Mustang, K car or other wise.

Hub caps or wheel covers , my original owner said his wheel covers were not on car but in trunk along with 14 inch spare wheel .

I had a 63 K code (Fairlane) and it came with wheel covers. The dealer had it in stock

I don't believe they were. I have a friend that bought a new hipo in 65, he told me he could not get 15" wheels. Plan 14" wheels with hubcaps, or 14" styled steel wheel. His car was one of the first hipo fastbacks.

My poppy red '65 K code GT coupe came with black 14" wheels and standard hubcaps, not styled steel, or spinners or wires and it didn't have a pony interior. It did have an 8000 rpm rally pack. It also had the optional 3.50 rear end instead of the standard 3.89's. That was a mistake because in '65 you could only get a close ratio 4 speed so it was kind of doggy off the line. In '66 you could get a wide ratio as well as a C-4

Both of mine had 3.50 gears, I believe they were standard. 3.89 optional. One had black wheels and one with style steel wheel.

The 65 MUST only came through with 14" (13" for 6-cyl). The GT-350 came through with 15" (steel or styled).

Usually, steel wheels painted body color was an option.

This is subject to correction as it is from memory.

I've owned three 65's and repaired a slew of them during my body shop career. All 13'' wheels were black, all 14'' wheels were black. 15'' steel wheels- Nope.

I was working at the Ford deale in Trenton Illinoins in 1965. I was doing flunky work as well as new car prep. They all came in with the hubcaps and front carpet in the trunk and I installed them. I seem to think the radio antena also had to be installed. Not certain about that one. A friend of mine won a '65 Mustang convertable in a Brillcream contest. I did the dealer prep. Red convertable, 289 Hi Po, 4 speed, 3.89 rear end, rally pack. It was not a GT. Nice car. He sold it for college money. I raced the car when the second owner had it at the Nashville Illinois 1/8 mile track with my dual quad 312 3 speed '57 Bird. Beat him by a half a car length in the 1/8 mile. I was also running a 3.89 rear end. We rat raced all the way back home and it was a prety even match.

Ford offered 15" painted steel wheels for early Mustangs.

In 1965, Mustang offered a 15 x 5.5" steel wheel, part # C1AZ-1007-A

Then in 1966 Mustang offered a 15 x 6" steel wheel, part # C5ZX-1007-A

The '66 steel 15 x 6 wheel was painted grey and offered a "simulated wire"
wheel cover in 15", part # C3AZ-1130-Z, OR you could get the small
poverty hubcap, part # C6DZ-1130-A
