Taking Advantage of Modern Chemistry
What do you do to maximize the advantages of the modern products you use in your Model "A"?
For example, modern gasoline has 87 Octane whereas gasoline when the "A" was new had about 50 Octane or less and no lead. > I time the engine in advance of TDC, and reduce the spark plug gaps.

Re: Taking Advantage of Modern Chemistry
I never had a need to compromise the timing or spark plug gap on any A's.. I prefer a hotter spark compared to what I would have with a smaller plug gap..3X plugs work good for me
We all have our different preferences but the one thing in common is we all enjoy our cars I do run modern air in the tires "nitrogen" without the green caps Last edited by Mitch//pa; 02-19-2016 at 07:57 PM. |

Re: Taking Advantage of Modern Chemistry
I don't know about modern chemistry in our A's. Back in the ole days when I needed motorbike insurance and didn't have any money I filled the tires with helium. Back then the insurance was lower on a light bike. The cut-off was either 300 or 350 #. Had the bike weighed and the registration changed. Got the lower rate.
Wouldn't think of doing any such thing today. [ sarcasm font] But, after some reflection, many of us do take advantage of modern chemistry in our old critters. We use modern detergent oils, Sea-Foam, MMO, modern upper plates, new greases and heavy oils, radial ties, centrifugal advances, downdraft carburetors, etc. Its a long list. |

Re: Taking Advantage of Modern Chemistry
MMO is modern?
I use a K&N air filter and synthetic oil. I also have radial tires and an aluminum fan, halogen headlights and LED tail lights. |

Re: Taking Advantage of Modern Chemistry
I assume you're joking about using "nitrogen". A few years ago a desk jockey at the Arizona DOT was insisting we convert to nitrogen in state vehicles. So I emailed his underling who was to implement this nonsense and asked him if 78% nitrogen was good enough for the boss. He emailed back and said he would check. About 1/2 hour later he caught on and I apologized for pulling his leg. But it was funny!

Silicon spray. Use on key lock barrels and heaps of other places where oil would attract dust and wear things out.
