Re: Toploader transmission
Yeah, but the synchro sleeve appears to be too far back into 2nd gear

Re: Toploader transmission
Yes in the correct order, the large gear on the rear is 1-R the syncro is 2 rearward and 3 forward. Yes the syncro outer sleeve is too far rearward. It appears the fordward 3 blocker ring is too close to the 2nd gear teeth, there should be a space between about a dime to a nickle thickness width. This gives the impression the transmission should be taken apart and checked over.

Re: Toploader transmission
Ok so when I got the box it was a greasy mess so had it tank cleaned, so was it used incorrectly or maybe it wasn’t used. If I strip it what am I looking for?

Re: Toploader transmission
The book suggested above, which is a very good source of information for these transmissions: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...trans-book.htm

Re: Toploader transmission
Like the others have said. Get Van Pelts book. Take that transmisison apart, inspect and reassemble. I never trust any work by an unknown person.

Re: Toploader transmission
Before disassembling the transmission be sure it has a ujoint installed which pulls the mainshaft to the rear, shift the synchro hub to nuetral, check the end play of the second gear between the rear thrust washer and 2nd or the the 16 helical splines and 2nd, Ford spec is .004"-.008". Also the 3rd gear synchro ring may have ample clearance after a ujoint is installed(if not currently present).
If neither of these suggestions change the clearances then the transmission should be disassembled. Good luck, Paul J |
