Default Front Cross Member Problems

I'm restoring a 29 town sedan that came from N. Dakota and the front cross member had a really bad farm repair so I replaced it with what I thought was the right cross member, when I put the radiator in it doesn't fit, it was hitting the bracket with the crank hole, so I took the crank hole bracket off thinking I had the wrong one and it's still bottoming out on the drivers side even without the crank hole bracket. I must have the wrong year cross member hopefully someone can tell me what to look for and maybe have one I could buy. I was hoping to get this going this year, this is a real set back, it was a lot of work for me riveting that cross member in there; I was getting ready to start the motor. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob

That's a late 29-31 cross member, you just need to put a shim were the
radiator sits. Page 387 of the Service Bulletins shows this conversion.

I am not this good at judging this but does he have a 1930/31 cross member rather than a 1928/29??

Yes, the easy way to tell is where the crossmember leaves the frame rail, it would be level for the 28-9 , but notice how this 30-1 has a dip of about 1/4". The fix is easy, as Bob said, just need to add a shim about 1/4" to each side for the radiator to set on.

I have the same problem....30-31 crossmember on a 29 pickup.

I used two 1/8" pads between the radiator mount and the crossmember on each side...works fine..

This is what the vendors sell.

I think old tire sidewalls would work too...

actually, that is an improved and closer-to-original pad than what most vendors sell.

Why did you put washers above the castle nut?

Would be nice if people who ask for help would update the status.
