Default 1940 drive shaft?

Is it possible to replace the drive shaft with a tube type, like the 36 had? The center carrier bearing is gone.

That COULD work, but there's a bit more to it than meets the eye.

The torque tube should be same length, but the BIG problem is that a '36 pinion has 10 splines, and the solid drive shafts from '37-on had 6 splines. Then, you'd also run unto the radius rods and the way they mount on the rear end differently. Better to bite the bullet and repair it with that X-pensive center bearing (if ya can find one), or contact Skip in Florida for his replacement bearing. DD

Bill, I am very sure I read a few years back on the internet where a fellow reused his OEM torque tube center bearing by making a mold where he encased it in a polyurethane liquid . I can't find that posting right now. The center bearing itself doesn't really wear out but, the rubber encasing it does dissolve.
READ all the info. you can find about that bearing starting here.

Yes, it is but you'll need a 10 to 6 spline adapter from Vanpelts. You would need a 35/36 drive shaft and torque tube. Measure the old 40 dive shaft. Cut the 35/36 drive shaft at the 10 spline plug and remove it. You'll have to turn the new adapter down to press into the 35/36 drive shaft and re weld it into place. Then you will have to move the radius rod mount to the 40 Ford location.

I just repaired a '39 and it was a solid driveshaft- I had a sheared pin at the coupling. I even posted photos here. Newc

I believe Skip sells a replacement for the bearing Take a look at what he has since it may have a repair sleeve for the driveshaft.
