Re: Drag link
What pan are you using? You probably need a rear sump pan used by pickups or mercs.

I've got a little experience with that problem. It definitely takes the rear-sump pan, like pictured BELOW. On SOME cars, the drag link STILL hits the pan, and I have not yet figured-out why for sure. I believe it MAY have to do with how high the front of the engine is mounted. Some guys are able to bend the '40 Pitman arm down to fix the problem. Others seem un-fixable without pan surgery. Nevertheless, here is a sure-fire solution to the problem. Just takes a minimum of pan surgery. Hope this helps some! Coop |

Re: Drag link
I am using one of these on my 40 Ford car. v8's idea might be less expensive.

Yeah, that's that '49-1sh Mercury oil pan that takes the $450 oil pump pick-up assembly to work with. Those things were a dime for two dozen of 'em when 19Fordy built that little black coupe. Coop |

Re: Drag link
I wish I knew the for sure answer to why the truck pan works on some '37 to '40 chassis and doesn't work on others. I had a '40 with a 8CM and truck pan with no problems. I took a chevy engine out of my '38 and installed an 8CM engine with a truck pan and the pan is in the way big time. I already had the engine installed and running before I found the steering obstruction. I was able to bend the pitman arm, but it looks tacky. I'm about ready to pull the engine for some other changes and will modify the pan while it is out.

Re: Drag link
why not just bend the drag link to clear the pan and readjust steering?

Re: Drag link
I had no idea those pans and pick-ups were commanding that kind of money. sure hope nothing ever happens to the one on my Merc. I bought one back in 1994 from Flathead jack for $100= shipping ( pan only).
