headers vs duals

I LOVE Reds Headers....regaurdless of what some have said, i could notice a difference in low end performance on the 8BA in my 52 Vicky with dual steel packs.

Beware: the smithys available nowadays are not as good as the ones we had back in the day. They are thinner and will rust out pretty fast unless you drill a 1/8 or so drain hole in the bottom rear.

If you go on YouTube you can find different videos with their sound...... in my previous comment, what I meant was if he wasn’t sure he wanted his exhaust loud, that was an inexpensive way to try it out. I have duals and Brockmans on my ‘51...... Mark

Asking a flat head fan about their preference for dual exhaust compared to headers, is like asking for their preference in woman, when it comes right down to it, 'any port in a storm works just fine'.
When I first built the 59AB engine in my '36, it had a lot of modification of the day '53 done to it, the exhaust is stock '36 log manifolds with Douglas mufflers 1.5' pipes. In '54 I purchased a set of Belond headers, could not get them to clear the steering gears so I put the stock manifolds back on. In '55 I got tired of the noise so I put stock mufflers on the car... The quiet was golden...
In '75 I had a new exhaust system built for the car, stock chambered mufflers with 2" pipes, exhaust was a little deeper in sound and you could barely hear the cam overlap in the tail pipes on an idle...
I guess the difference with me is that I grew up a little, and I drove the car for daily transportation to and from work...

I've never owned a flathead, but I understand they are notorious for over heating issues. True headers (tubing) will release much more heat in the engine bay than cast manifolds do. If you do the header route, be prepared to do the header wrap bit if you have resultant overheat problems.

Back in the early 50's, my friends stock 48 did slow down after his Dad made him replace the muffler.

It would be a good time for some of the Newbys to buy JWL book "Flathead facte" this will save you agreat deal of money in the future. Hid Dyno tests showed no increase in power with either.

I know of a dyno test of Fenton vs stock exhaust and the stock Ford exhaust manifolds made slightly more HP. The person who performed the test builds everything from flatheads to certified aircraft engines.

After having them installed for over 30 years, I still love my Fenton cast iron headers. They look and sound great! Anyone who puts power over style shouldn't run a flathead anyway.

I put a stainless dual exhaust with SS Smithys style muffs from Waldrons, LOVE the sound and I'll never have to replace anything. Costs a bit more than regular steel but I'll never have to replace anything

No problem using the original manifolds and clearing the steering box. Only a matter of a good pipe bender.
