Ford vs Mercury transmission

I have a 1937 Ford toploader transmission (no synchro) and have an opportunity to pick up a 1939 Mercury toploader tranmission (supposedly with synchro).

Are these transmissions the same (to facilitate a swap) other than the internal synchro gears in the later model Merc?

Were all 1939 Merc transmissions equipped with the synchro or were some early ones the same (no synchro) as the older (pre 1939) Ford transmissions?

Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

They all have synchronizers starting in 32. That only applies to second & high , low is not. However, the 39 is more desirable and it will bolt right in.

'32 thru early '39 trans had a syncro hub with the tapered syncro 'brake' surface integral
with the hub. Along about Nov or Dec of '38 Ford introduced the much improved loose ring syncro design where the hub now only trapped the syncros, this design about doubled the syncro 'braking' surface. The '37 Ford and '39 Merc trans are interchangeble, except maybe the rear mount....not sure. Anyhoo except for some monster truck applications '32 up had syncromesh, just much improved for '39.

Did a 39 merc use a 78 case or did they have their own 99A case ?

Pretty much the same case.

They used a 78 case but many Mercury’s had the 29 tooth cluster. Ford put a yellow paint mark on the LH Side of the transmission case on Mercury’s with the 29 tooth cluster

Early 1939 Mercury cars had a 99A case but they are somewhat rare. Someone started a thread about this some years ago and there were photos of the number on the case but it looked identical to the ones used in the Ford cars on the outside. The inside had the 29/15 related gears.

On the top were the serial number is stamped?

Or on the bottom were the ford part number is? I was asking about the part number under the cluster gear shafts

The 99A transmission case has a casting number to that respect. Not stamped. The transmissions of the prewar and immediate post war era all had the serial numbers stamped on above the inspection port unless they were replacements. I think they had a brain fart when they found that the two cases were basically the same so after a short time they were all using the same case.
