Default Generator/Cutout question

I recently acquired a car I knew little about, and I have multiple problems that need addressing, one is the generator/cutout/ ammeter function...another is the distributor.
My question...is there any reason I cant temporarily remove the cutout and just put a light switch in the circuit, so that I can manually control whether the generator is trying to charge or not?

Yes, you can do that but just be sure the switch is closed when the generator is running. In an open charging circuit the generator can put out up to 40 volts and cook itself, so turn the switch on just before starting the engine, or the second the engine starts, then turn the switch OFF as soon as the engine is turned off.

Myself, I would just install a tested good cutout.

If you are just wanting to run the engine for testing and keep the fan moving you could also ground out the generator by removing the cutout, run a wire from the generator output post/wire to ground and tape the battery connection so it does not short out.

Ah, yes, therein lies the rub...I dont have one.
I think I finally fixed this problem, I installed a Fun projects cutout w/ the EVR and it seems to be working like they say it should.
Sorry it took me so long to report back, but I got sidetracked and just did this on Friday.
In retrospect, I should have just shipped it off to Tom W and let him work his magic on it. Next time that is what I will do.
Thanks Tom for your help!

How about getting a switch double pole single throw. The center of the switch is wired to the output of the generator and one side to the car and the other to ground.

The com to the gen, L1 to ground, L2 to the car.
