Default 49AB turn over before install, NO turn now

Just installed my 59ab in the 36 pickup with clutch and trans on. Test turned before install, turned over great. Installed everything, starter, generator, and drive line. went to turn over and only turns about an 1/8 of a turn either way. When i did it the first time i set the pan on my exhaust, and put a very small dent in the pan near the front. Is the pan close enough to the crank, a small dent could cause a problem? If not I have no Idea where to start to find the problem. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Also can I get the pan off in the truck? Thanks Ron

The dent in the pan is on the other side of the pan and has always been there, not the pan. LOST!!!!! I did a valve job on it when it was out and turned over many times, no problem. Ron

Is the trans in neutral? Are you sure? Not stuck in two gears?

Loosen the starter motor and see if you can turn it over....

I have had my starter bendix fail and cause this. I would second petehoovie's recommenation and turn her over with a wrench on the crank pulley after the starter is lose.

Starter out, no problem. Trans is rebuilt shifts all gears, in neutral, truck rolls back and forth. Like I said engine and trans installed together and turned easy before install. Racking what's left of my brain. Don't what to pull, as everything good before install. Can't even think of what's next! All the easy stuff looked at. Ron

I put the intake on in the truck, I will remove that, and look at the valves. Ron

Took intake off all good. Took distributer off, WRONG BOLTS, TOO LONG. Hit timing gear. Problem solved. Thanks to all who tried to help. Another BONEHEAD move on my part. Still have lots to do. Hope I'm done with those. Ron

Could you have damaged the timing gear with the too long bolts???

Appreciate your forthright admission of the problem. Now we all know the consequences of too long bolts

Glad you found it before you "leaned on it" and threw a bunch of aluminum shavings into the oil pan from the cam gear! (Or worse!)

Also, takes a solid human to admit mistakes - you've done yourself and others a service for talking about a simple problem - that can be catastrophic if repeated by the next guy! Nicely done . . .

Thanks to all again. When I took the bolt out, I couldn't believe that I even put it in. After 5 years, and being in a hurry its fairly easy to make a mistake. I will check and recheck everything I do. I'm lucky I didn't do some real damage. Ron
