Paint code for "straw" wheels

I am having a hard time finding the correct paint code or formula for the straw colored wheels on my '31. Anyone have the magic numbers that would be willing to share?

My 1930 CCPU is a burgundy colour. The wheels were powder coated the same when it was restored over there but now, they are an awful red/brown colour similar to red oxide primer and about as dull. The powder coating has faded but not the paint on the car. I have never powder coated wheels. If you are thinking of doing so, I'd suggest you think carefully before doing so.

I agree, as I also have some shop equipment that is powdercoated and badly faded.
I'd stick with PPG paint.

I have black powder coated wheels on my '28 that were done in the early 90's and they still look like glass...very nice, no chips.
As with painters, they come in all qualities, some not so good, some excellent.

I have been told that the wheels on my coupe are straw. I use Rustolium almond for touch-up. Extremely close match. On a fast horse, you can't tell the difference. John

If it helps, I ended up painting mine with Rustoleum Painter's choice 2X. I tried several colors trying to get as close to the Straw that is on the yellow side. We didn't find the almond to be what we wanted. I found what worked very well as a match to other club members that had that color wheel. The paint color is Warm Yellow. There is also a Sun yellow that we tried, but it was too yellow. I used Gloss. I'm pleased with the way they came out and they look like others that had them done professionally.

From what I gather, there are varying degress of gloos in power coating. I went for gloss in the spray can. A club member gave me a wheel had had powder coated with the straw color to replace a bad wheel I had and I decided sray it with Warm yellow. the shade of his wheel before spraying it was pretty identical to the ones I painted, but not as glossy. Mine seem brighter but for the most part, the same color. I found tis color in stock at Home Depot, as not all places seem to carry the same colors. It took about a can per side.

Note that this paint is more fragile than powder coating, so you have to be careful. I let mine dry for a couple of weeks in good climate conditios before I installed the tires, so not to sractch off the paint. I haven't messed with them much since, but so far they are holding up well. Also would be easy to touch up if necessary. I would not wire brush them though and haven't tried to test to see how easy it would be to scratch.You can't see them well in the profile pic as its over-exposed and look very light.

I have been looking for painters touch warm yellow for a week now, but apparently according to rustoleum Canada, it's not one of the colours offered in the "Canadian line". Key lime green and other obscure food shades, but not the warm yellow. Sun yellow and almond are allowed to travel, but not warm yellow.

Any thoughts from the Canadian barners as to what other product is close?

You affirmatively say as a fact that straw was not a wheel color. Firstly, black wheels were about all that came out of Ford factories. I have not gone back to JS but it does/did give relevance to wheels painted stripe color. What do you say about all the 31's (particularly early slants that had straw wheels, later changed to tacoma?). Wouldn't they have had straw wheels to match stripe????

IMO, Chris is correct. It's been in the Judging Standards for years and currently in Section 22, pages 1 and 2.

I powder coated the wheels on my '31 RDPU black about 20 years ago. They still look great. I have dropped tire irons on them and the cat has peed on them. You need to find a powder coater that knows what he is doing. Some types of powder can't stand up to sunlight. The wheels need to be sandblasted and powder coated immediately. I would do it again.

To my knowledge Straw was a pin striping color and not an available wheel color.

Black and White are the two easiest colors to maintain. I had a Triumph painted with Imron Poly in titanium white. After 30 years the paint would 'glow' after a good waxing and electric buffing.

The wire wheels can be hard to polish, but I have found that the 'spray on' detail wax works great for wheels as it is VERY easy to buff up.

It's your car and you can paint them any color you want. I'm sure if a customer wanted the wheels painted a different color they would have done so (as with commercial customers wanting passenger cars in 1931). BUT if you want to have what the FACTORY sent out;

WHEEL COLORS
Prior to June 1930, wheels were dipped in gloss black
enamel. Colored wheels, beginning in June 1930,
were available as an accessory (judged in this area)
on all passenger vehicles except the DeLuxe Roadster,
DeLuxe Phaeton, Conve11ible Sedan, DeLuxe Tudor
and DeLuxe Fordor (160-C) which were equipped with
colored wheels as standard equipment. Ford specified
that colored wheels were first dipped in a base coat of black enamel, then
sprayed with a final color coat. The following colors were available:
June 1930 through June 1931: Black, Apple Green, Aurora Red, Orange, Tacoma Cream
September 1930 through June 1931: Black, Hessian Blue (on vehicles painted Lombard Blue)
After June 1931: Black, Apple Green, Aurora Red, Tacoma Cream

'Tacoma Cream' is likely the proper term for a 'straw' color.
RAL-1001 is a good color code for powder-coating rims for the 'Tacoma Cream' color.

Brought my spare to paint shop, they matched the color in spray can and

a bottle. Did pinstriping with bottle and will use can to touch up wheels.

Not too expensive.

On the west coast (California), our local Les Schwab tire shops will have your wheels powder coated. They use a specific vendor in Oregon. They are sand blasted, primed then powder coated. You pick your color from a selection chart. We had ours done in Frehauf Yellow, closest thing to Straw Yellow. Runs $48.00 per wheel with a 2 week turn around.
