Default Ford Mercury

Here's something you may not see very often. It is hanging on my wall in the garage. As I understand it, Edsel wanted the Merc and Henry didn't. When Edsel won, Henry was very much afraid that nobody would recognize tha the Mercury was a Ford product and ordered the first 100 '39 Mercurys to have these hub caps. In fact, all the first '39 Mercs were hand built to keep detractors from picking them apart. I owned a '39 Merc coupe for about 16 years and found that later '39 sheet metal parts would not fit often unless massaged slightly for fit. This hub cap was found in a bay area pawn shop many years ago sitting in the window and had the princely sum of $10 affixed to it. Now if I only had my Merc back and 3 more caps!

Very interesting. I appreciate it when car folks pick up on something like this and share it with others.
Thanks,
