1940 Coupe side quarter glass installation
I am replacing the seals around the side quarter glass on my 40 coupe.
What are you using to take up space to make the window seals fit snuggly between the inner garnish moulding and outer body? Mine did have something like 3m (8578) strip caulk between outer seal and body. I am looking for something better looking and more rigid. Thanks Tom. |

Re: 1940 Coupe side quarter glass installation
Tom, I had found this very same issue when a client sent me Sanders glass for his restoration. It was much thinner the stock glass. As I recall, nearly .030" thinner.
I prefer having my glass to be cut locally from the correct stock. Regardless, I utilized black electricians tape to build up the required thickness and along with the rubber seal placed over the tape, the glass fit snug.

Re: 1940 Coupe side quarter glass installation
On my 40 I used the item shown. You apply it after the glass and garnish molding is installed. I applied it with my finger and it smooths out really nice. Easily wipes off with gasolene. I used this product because I didn't want water to seep between the garnish molding and body or "cloud up" the glass over time. My quarter window glass is the correct thickness.
I am pretty sure I read on Fordbarn that no such "filler" was used at the factory install. Therefore, may not meet AAA standards. Read everything here, including the links. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...er+window+seal Last edited by 19Fordy; 07-31-2021 at 10:33 AM. |

I measured both the old and new and they measure the same 1/4". I feel the glass fits snug enough in the rubber seal but not snug enough between the inner garnish moulding and the body. I will try what you suggested. Thanks Tom. |
