Fixing a leaky steering column

To fix a leaking steering column, the repro houses offer a "O" ring and a thin, flat washer, which goes on the end of the steering sector shaft, to fix the problem.

For those of you who have tried this "fix"...does it work?

I tried it. The fix worked for a while then it unfixed itself.

I did not bore out the column for the o ring.

Mine has stayed Dry for over thirty years or 20000 miles. I always grease O rings so they last longer.

It still leaks after placing it in the shaft. I guess there are a lot of us who get fooled.

Bratton's and Mike's recommend boring a recess into the sector shaft to create room for the O-ring, whereas Snyder's doesn't. Curious whether people are actually doing that.

What they send with this little kit is a large diameter "O" ring to where, yes, you have to bore out the end to make it fit. HOWEVER...they make smaller diameter (thickness) "O" ring that if you were to move the bushing in slightly, the "O" ring will it into the recessed area. Yes...I for sure am not going to bore a resess into this column.

The only reason I am using oil in this column is because it does not hav a grease zerk on the steering shaft to put grease in.

By the way...this is a early 7-tooth column.

The O ring seems to be working for me but I must admit I started using Penrite Steering Box Lube at the same time.
