Smile Squealing brakes

I have a loud squeal from the front brakes on my CCPU. I am assuming its brake dust and have been removing the front drums and cleaning them about every 200 miles. Is this normal or is there an easier way to prevent this loud squeal when braking?

The brake lining gets a bevel on each shoe.

Are you saying I need to make a bevel or correct one?

is it one side or both on the front?
make sure nothing is hanging up the brakes glazing them and that the wheel spins free..jack it up under the axle... apply and release the brake pedal
yes we chamfer the leading and trailing edges.....
poor lining and drum issues can also cause squeals.

hard glazed linings will cause squeal, its the bonded linings that cause the most problem, even if you sand the glaze off the lining and inside the drum the squeal will return as you described, if yours are not woven linings switch to them, they are usually softer and wont squeal

Best thing is to lube All the metal to metal contact areas in each brake assembly. Squeeks are GONE!
Yes, I keep repeating this, as, "REPETITION IS THE MOTHER OF LEARNING & THE FATHER OF BOREDOM"

The most common reason for squeeling brakes on the "A" in my opinion is the contact of the top or bottom of the shoes first to the drums.... and as Mitch said the shoes need a good "chamfer" on the leading and trailing edge.. like from the rivet head to the end of the shoe. Not too thin but enough to do the job. Well mated "Centered" shoes arced to fit the drums and true drums are a must as well.

As Bill said as well make sure the heads are riding on the tracks and installed correctly.
Try all that, use some brake clean on a clean rag and wipe down the shoes to remove any impurities on them and try it again after the above steps. Hopefully it will resolve the issue. Brakes are one of my forte's so hopefully this will help.

Happy Model A Motoring!

I'm GLAD I CAN hear brake squeeks & pinging---Over a number of years, I began to gradually lose HIGH pitched sounds & over several years, I re-gained all except those last 2 notes on a PIANO!!!! Those 2 just go "PLUNK", as if they had NO STRINGS!---Doctors were BAFFLED & had NO EXPLANATIONS !!!

you may need hearing aides... high pitches are usually the first things to decline with bad hearing...
yes the birds are still in the trees

good hearing is essential to listening for abnormal car noises..

Thanks to all. I'll check tonight on the camfer. It's only the front driver's side brake that squeals. It started on a tour a couple months ago. During a stop, I sprayed inside the drum with some carb cleaner I had in my tool box and it stopped for about 200 miles then started again. When I got home, I took the drum off, cleaned the drum, shoes, and re-packed the bearings while I was in there. No squeal for about 100 miles and now its back.
