Re: 1949 & 50 Merc oil pan question.
My question is; Do I absolutely have to have the oil pan connected to the bell?
I don't have a truck or Merc oil pan. |

Hey "philo" .....Coopman here! Sorry about the question marks. Someone complained about the way I posted pics, so I removed them, with a comment or two. It only hurt folks like you that need the info. Here is a picture of a side steer drag link very similar to your '33, which clearly shows that there will be NO interference with the oil pan. Now, as for NECESSARILY bolting to a Merc-like pan bracket....that's a FAIR QUESTION. You said that you are using a Mercury half-bell, which is the stamped-steel bell like the red one pictured. If so, you must use the correct starter plate that matches your half-bell. As you can see, there are 8 bolt holes around the perimeter of the bottom of the half bell which remain empty after bolting the bell to the block. I don't know why you couldn't use 1" bolts with flats and locks to clamp the starter plate to the flange around the bottom of the half bell. I can't imagine that arrangement not being rigid enough to completely stabilize the plate. Hoping this info helps you! DD ......... |
