8BA vs 59A Flywheels
Pulled the flywheel from a friends 40 today with a 59A engine. Ring gear has came off the flywheel and the teeth aren't very good either. Once I got it out it appears to me that this is a 8BA flywheel judging by another I have in the shop. So could this have caused the failure ? Never ran into this before.

Re: 8BA vs 59A Flywheels
It looks like a early wheel, 59ab style, The gear looks wide like 59ab and older. Everdently the gear has just come off. Put a new gear on. Walt

Re: 8BA vs 59A Flywheels
Hi Walt, The gear is not the wide one. It measures 12 7/8 I.D. The wide one is 12 3/8. It's just like the 8BA wheel I have layin in the shop. Do ya think this 8BA wheel is causing a problem running on the 59A? The gear on the bottom is the old one and the gear on the top is the wide early style.

V8Coopman "Note that the 8BA-type wheel has clutch bolt holes drilled all the way through, for easy ID".
You can not easily mix flywheels between 8ba & 59a. |

Re: 8BA vs 59A Flywheels
Thanks JSeery, the flywheel I removed has the bolt holes drilled all the way through. I'm thinking we need to go to a 59A wheel. Problem there is that the engine has been balanced.

Balance the wheel separately, thats how it usually is done. Walt

Re: 8BA vs 59A Flywheels
The flywheels are not interchangeable - The ring gears are located about 3/16" difference front to back. In one combination the starter will not disengage the ring gear in the other combination the starter gear will not fully engage. The ring gears are different widths between 8BA and 59. -36fordguy

Re: 8BA vs 59A Flywheels
Like Walt said, the flywheel/clutch/pressure plate should have been balanced separate from the rest of the rotating assembly.

Re: 8BA vs 59A Flywheels
Thanks everyone for the response. I have some early wheels around. We'll just have to get new clutch and PP and have the flywheel ground and balance it all.
