Default How much paint

How much paint is required to paint 6 wheels? I have 1/2 gallon of the paint I want to use but don't want to run short. It's s custom mix that I can't get in a short time frame if I do run short.

how will a response change your decision. Your going to use the paint no matter what. Do the spare(s) last. Wayne

Depends what type of paint .lacquer, enamel,BC/CC, urethane as well as what style paint gun you are using such as a gravity HPLV or an old school siphon Binks type gun. Need more specifics...

Do not forget,

How many bugs are out that day, how good are you at painting, and such.

This coming from someone who is not very good at painting.

Endura paint (polyurethane) sprayed with a small touch-up gravity HVLP gun, two coats for sure, likely 3.

used 1/2 gallon of acryl enamel to paint 5 wheels years back; thinned with solvent reducer approx. 1:1 . was barely enough to get desired coverage over primer even with the reducer + hardener ; also need some for re touch if scratched

How many coats did you have enough for??. Some paints cover better than others.

my recollection is 2 wet coats of Vermillion, minimized on the spokes and maximized on the hub area and front of rim using a siphon gun. again this was thinned acrylic enamel before urethanes / activators became popular

Hmmmm. I need to do 6 wheels (actually 16" 1935 wheels) and would like 3 coats. I figure that by using the small touch-up gun and narrowing the pattern, I will get more paint ON the wheel and less going PAST the wheel which would help the paint go further but not THAT much further.

Have you tried the water transfer painting method? It would take a lot less paint.
Here is a link to a youtube video on how to do it. They use a decal pattern but you can just pour straight paint onto the water instead. Practice a few times on spare parts.

I've seen that before but hadn't considered it. Don't really know how it works, what materials etc. or how durable. Pretty cool though. I appreciate all of the responses. I think I will do the first 4 with the paint i have and see how it goes. I don't have the two rims for the spares yet anyway, haven't been able to find 2 good ones. Thanks again for all of the input.
