How can I identify a 1934 ring and pinion vs a 1935 set? Took apart my axle (1934) and it has 3.78 gears with aftermarket bearings. I want confirm which set I have before I order bearings?

The 32-34 pinion is shorter, and takes smaller bearings. 378 would be odd for a 34, but who knows what has happened thru its life.

The aftermarket market made in Sweden bearings have me concerned. Does anyone have the measurements?

V8 Ford Sales in SC sells the bearings and double cone race but I think they are made overseas.Try to find originals as they are out there. The Ford Store in San Dimas and C & G in Escondido,CA has NOS originals.To put '35-36 10 spline pinion in a '34 banjo the pinion bearing surface has to be machined smaller to use the '33-34 pinion bearings and race. I put a set of 35-36 10 spline3.54's in a 34 banjo back in the late 1960's.Besides having the top of the 11 tooth gear of the pinion ground down to fit in the 33-34 banjo.I also had to have the driveshaft shortened because the pinion is longer.Here is a pic of the cone,part number 18-4616. The part number for the bearings is 18-4621.

Thank you, so if I compare a stock pinion 1934 shaft to what I have, if it is a 1935 it will be longer on the portion that goes into the driveshaft?

Yes unless it was shortened.Verify that driveshaft the pin location hole has not been redrilled. There is no way a stock '35-36 pinion can be installed in a 33-34 banjo without machining it.I have a buddy that has done several of these conversions.35-36 3.78 in a 33-34 .

The flat face where the torque tube mounts is 9/16" longer to the front on a 35& up diff due to the larger, and longer pinion bearings. So, yes, if you have a 34 to compare, the overall length is longer, and the smooth section where the pinion bearings ride is longer too. I've had some bad ones cluttering up the shop for years and just scrapped them a month ago, so sorry nothing here I can measure, but if you have both styles it would be obvious to see.

Thank you, parts are at a friend’s shop so I will have to verify the length next week.

It didn’t turn out well. We figured out that the ring gear is later and the pinion was a 1934. Looks like I need to find another set of 1935 to 36 or buy a new set. It appears someone was trying to join the parts and gave up years ago. Anyone have a set of 35/36 or a 1934 set that is 3.78 or higher?
