Default 34 ford gas tank bolts

I have had two original 34 fords. my question is, why the bolts that hold the gas tank in place on both cars . The rear bolt on the drivers side has a bolt like the radiator hold down. Bolt with a heavy spring and castle nut and carter key. My question is why. As i have no idea. Thanks Stan

To protect the gas tank when the frame flexes.
