Model A Ford Roof Gutters
Hi-
I'm looking for rain gutters for the roof of my 1929 Standard coupe that are bent to fit. Are there any out there? Originals preferred but repros are okay too. JeffK |

I don't know of any reproductions already curved to fit, there are too many variables to individual cars.

Re: Model A Ford Roof Gutters
Wondered about this but have no old gutter to try. Would it be possible to fill the trough with melted lead, bend the gutter to shape and then melt out the lead?

I think the aluminum gutters would melt with the lead.

Re: Model A Ford Roof Gutters
I got a pair of rain Gutters from Brattons, much like the originals for my delivery. I made a paper pattern of the car and sent it to them. They made the gutters and nailing pieces from the patterns, prebent. It really didn't cost that much extra. I had some aluminum repops that I was told to message over wooden patterns cold. I since gave up on them. I have seen a few on cars and Bill's hide welt looks much better. Give Brattons a call.May just work out for you.

Re: Model A Ford Roof Gutters
I have installed the repop aluminum gutters on tudor sedans. They come in straight lengths of extruded aluminum. It is pretty tough work to get them bent just right for a good proper fit. I still believe that the repop aluminum gutters are a better choice than using hide'em welting. The original steel gutters, if available, are still the best way to go.

The ones I got from Bratton's are steel. Look just a tad heavier gauge metal than the originals. Appear to me to be about the same, where the aluminum look quite a bit bulkier.

Re: Model A Ford Roof Gutters
Hide-Em-Welt just creates the "illusion" of rain gutters. Probably looks better than crude, hand bent, NEW gutters. HIGH POINTS folks just "CRINGE"!

Re: Model A Ford Roof Gutters
I bent the aluminum gutters and installed then. It was absolutely the hardest thing I've done on the car so far. Took days. I made a block with a channel cut into it to tap the gutter onto the retainer. You have to bend the retainer and gutter at the same time and then snap them apart. I have heard that you should use wax paper in between the two while bending to assist in the disassembling. I didn't and tore up several sets trying to get them apart. When I asked all the guys in the local club what the secret was, they told me original gutters or hidem welt.

Re: Model A Ford Roof Gutters
I bought mine from Snyder's. I made a hardwood pattern, sandwiched between two guide blocks, a bending jig! I didn't figure the overbend enough. Then I welded a bend pattern on my fabrication table and tried to complete the bend with some heat. I clamped the part applied heat and pressure and proceeded to screw it up completely. I primed the pieces, put them in the corner, and waited till someone who knows what they're doing, comes along.

Re: Model A Ford Roof Gutters
I tried that do you hook the bottom of the tack strip and tap into the groove on the top of the tack strip?
