Re: Flathead Air Pump
Man, that's startin' to make me dizzy trying to wrap my head around exactly what's going-on here, or even what the need for it would be. Why and where is that big 2" (or maybe even 2-1/2") inlet pipe coming from? I DO see the provision for the belt drive. So....WTF, over? DD

Re: Flathead Air Pump
I guess that they made do with a 8ba head gasket at some time. You gota do what you gota do. I think that the inlet valve is closed on the compression stroke.

Well yeah it's an air compressor, but too many "why" questions about it. For instance, why did someone find it necessary to use a two-inch diameter outlet pipe? Think about the size of a single exhaust pipe on a '40 Ford. That's way overkill for the volume of compressed air that flatty will produce. It's also not necessarily gonna be easy to set that rig up and power it with another belt-drive power source, not to forget some sort of compressed air receiver tank. Just seems overcomplicated for what could be done with more traditional, and simpler equipment. But what do I know? DD |

Re: Flathead Air Pump
Maybe the larger diameter pipe was so oil vapour would settle out.
I wonder if they used super soft springs on the intake so it'd still intake on the firing stroke?

Re: Flathead Air Pump
I have 2 Schramm air compressors of the medium size version where they fire on 4 and pump on 4 cylinders.
The big versions was 2 flatheads bolted togetter...one driving the other one that was pumping air. |

Re: Flathead Air Pump
If all valves were made inoperable and a poppet valve was fitted at the intake port this setup makes sense. Maybe not the most efficient but you work with what you have.

Re: Flathead Air Pump
I think it was home made and just an engine hooked up so it moves air. It looks to have a big flat belt drive at the flywheel. Without seeing if all the valves have been modified, it's hard to work out exactly how it works. If it were a stock engine it work work like that, but would be more efficient depending on if other mods were made.
It's a pre 8BA motor and has had the bell trimmed off, effectively making the block scrap. Shame. It might still yield up some useful parts though if cheap enough. |

Re: Flathead Air Pump
Maybe it uses compressed air to turn the belt as an output.

Re: Flathead Air Pump
There's no cam drive, so something like that "almost" makes sense.

Re: Flathead Air Pump
The pulley is probably just a 9" flywheel that has been machined.

Re: Flathead Air Pump
Belt Pulley is a circular piece around a flywheel?
Skid mounted, set up for a large electric motor? One way air valves on each cylinder? No apparent cooling mechanism other than air cooled? High volume low pressure pump.......Bakersfield area is known for oil production, may be related?

Re: Flathead Air Pump
Regarding the pipe, since the exhaust is blocked off, it would be running 2 cycle and twice the original capacity.
Maybe the exhaust lobe has been ground off and the close ramp modified on the intake? It could be a piece of farm equipment, run by the flat belt drive of a tractor or a overhead line drive, in a shop.

Re: Flathead Air Pump
If it were close by and cheap i would buy it. I like it just for the make due with what you got approach. Someone did spend some time making it. Seen alot worse done on some current "hot rods"
The check valves in the sparkplug ports look like common air compressor unloader valves with the small port plugged |

Re: Flathead Air Pump
With hose clamps on all the connections it must not have built up a lot of pressure. I agree with buying it if it was close by. I bought a stationary engine that powered a water pump at the paper mill in Westbrook, ME....... Mark
