8BA running issue
Just got done working in a friends 37 ton and a half truck. It wouldn't run at all, so he thought carb issue, I went through the carb just to check it out and all seemed fine.
I told him to pick up a new condenser and we put it on( still using the 59 carb I loaned him) and it started and ran good. So we swapped back to the 8BA carb and it idled great, throttle response was great. I left him, and he took it in a test drive and called me. Said it had no get up and go, and he went up a hill and it wouldn't go over 40, and just no power. Accelerator pump is leather type and working good. Only thing I noticed was every time he punched the gas I noticed air bubbles in the glass fuel bowl. Is this normal? |

Re: 8BA running issue
No, it is sucking air from somewhere. May or may not be related to the low power issue.

Re: 8BA running issue
Ok, so he's still having issues, I told him to disconnect all supply lines to the fuel pump and run a line straight into a 5 gallon can, should at least eliminate the lines, and tank as the culprits.

Re: 8BA running issue
That's a distict possibility, can be checked easily with a timing light, or will it be different under a load?
I have a spare distributor, maybe I should clean it up and see if it makes a difference . |

Re: 8BA running issue
It's an 8BA ignition? You can easy test by pulling the carb end of the vacuum pipe, pulling the distributor cap, watch the points plate as you suck on the vacuum pipe. It should move, and it should stay at its moved position if you seal the pipe with your toung. First part says it moves (good) second that the diaphragm and pipe are good. When you release your toung the points plate should snap back to its stops.
Edit, Just re read your post. You had a 59 carb on there for loan? What was the vacuum line from the ignition plumbed into? 8BA has the loadamatic ignition with vacuum line from ignition to carb back about half way up. Is this pipe plumbed correctly? Martin. |

Re: 8BA running issue
Now it is, but when the early carb was on it, it was not hooked up.

Re: 8BA running issue
Just in case anyone's wondering, he got it running, now when i was helping him I asked" how are your plugs". He said he just replaced them last summer. ( got to keep in mind we have very short summers) So a couple friends went over there yesterday and pulled one of them out, completely fouled! So they changed em out and it runs great! So don't overlook the simple things.
