I picked up a cheap 38 standard and put it on the road.
A few months back I picked up this for what I thought was too cheap to pass up. Goal was not to restore but fix up some and drive around....my daughters have been bugging me for a closed car with suicide doors for a while...and since I can't afford a 33 i figured this would work.
A soild car but was missing the engine, radiator and some dash parts, grill parts and a hood ornament. It had a nasty dent as well on the back passenger side roof that was beat with a sledgehammer.....

Re: I picked up a cheap 38 standard and put it on the road.
First step was to haul it home... and get a bunch of the primer off of it and repaint the areas that where in need as well a metalwork the roof and paint the repair.
I then weathered my repairs to match the rest of the original paint.

Next step was to find an original 85hp engine since that is what this car originally had.
Lucked out and a friend had a runner out of car that was street rodded. Hauled it home and my little one wanted to paint it....so a gladly let her.

Re: I picked up a cheap 38 standard and put it on the road.
Next I put the engine in..... and started looking for a v8 85 radiator.. as well as all the missing dash, grill and hood ornament.
I also needed to redo the brakes..... I was going to stay mechanical but a friend who I have been helping with his model a coupe.. offered to sell and deliver the old chassis from under his car. I couldn't refuse, he bought the A in 1958 when he was a teenager(he set the car untouched in his barn till this year when he finally decided to restore it!!!) It has 1939 hydraulic brakes added to it, so that solved my missing brake part issues.

And let our daughters (age 7 and 11) totally do the brake conversion (with supervision). It took them a full day but they had a blast and did great!! I just had to break free a few bolts and help double flair the lines.

Re: I picked up a cheap 38 standard and put it on the road.
Next I replaced the busted rear glass, drivers rear door glass, and found a nicer windshield frame with new glass in it.
I also put a headliner in it and hogringed a new piece of mohair on the rear seatback. (It was badly deteriorated from the window beeing knocked out for so long). I also cleaned up the rest of the interior as best I could. I found a radiator and had it shipped from texas to pa. I also found a free cut apart rusty gas tank that was more soild than mine to I cleaned it up, welded it back together and installed it, along with all new fuel lines. I then took it for the first spin around the block.

Re: I picked up a cheap 38 standard and put it on the road.
Then though here and though the hamb I finally located the missing parts I needed, except the grill trim.. I ended up having to MAKE the missing pieces.
So with the TLC this old car cleaned up fair and gets to see the road for the first time in many many decades!!!

Great thread! And car. This is perhaps the best weathered paint job/repair I have ever seen. I have tried many home brews and processes for over 30 years and have yet to hit it right on like you have.

Re: I picked up a cheap 38 standard and put it on the road.
Thanks everyone!!
I try my best to raise my girls as motorheads... they love old cars, help often and love going to the racetrack and really love it when I race. I try to take my role as dad more serious than any other aspect of my life...I try to introduce them to as many different things as I can. As a side note I am also a musician and involve both girls in that as well.. they both play guitar and sing... the 11 year old has more gigs this year than my band actually!!!! She does a few songs with my group... it is an amazing feeling to play on stage with one of your kiddoes!!! Also, since I keep building cars I have been contacted for movies and recently got heavily involved in a film about the 1965 kecksburg UFO crash....so after renting a few of my cars and trucks I became friends with the director and got my girls the role of the aliens in the film!!!! We had a blast and they LOVED to get a chance to walk the red carpet!!!! Very neat stuff and strange how stuff happens, I actually am hired as production designer (and head of the art department) on another period film. So this 38 and my 52 f1 (that I am in the process of re-painting right now) will be in that film!!!!

Re: I picked up a cheap 38 standard and put it on the road.
This is one of the neatest old car and family stories I've read in quite some time - just wonderful. The experiences you're all sharing create a lifetime foundation of positive memories - based on participation, versus "talk". You're one heck of a good Dad and you have a wonderful family -- keep doing all your doing. I also hope that one day you'll pass that 38' onto one of your kids and that they cherish it long after you've parted this earth - and that they pay it forward with their kids. Thanks for sharing - made my night!

Re: I picked up a cheap 38 standard and put it on the road.
Somehow I was following this thread and marveling at your skills in the paint/resto/non resto field and didn't look at the videos until now. I grew up in a very musical family, where we all played instruments and sang. I KNOW the difference. That cover of Stairway was absolutely first rate and all the things that the others said about your fathering was spot on. Keep doing what you are doing. And more pics of the 38 as you go on.

Great Story! So good to see your daughters getting involved in your interests. I also enjoyed "Stairway To Heaven". My son's band did that song 20 years ago when they were in High School.
It's been great to have time to restore an old tractor that belonged to my dad this summer with my boys who are now 44 & 47. It's a Ford 851 Workmaster. Turned out great. Al Hook |

Re: I picked up a cheap 38 standard and put it on the road.
Thanks so much for all the kind words..... I let my daughter read some of the music comments and it made her day.
We took it on a fairly long 2 hour drive this weekend in the heat and it ran great!!! I didnt have to touch anything mechanically. Gary, really doubt I will sell the car anytime soon... A) I need to keep it at least till the movie is filmed. And B) both girls really like it as does the wife......so I think it is part of the family for sure. In fact this weekend I just finished totally redoing and painting my everyday driver...they are now bugging me to redo the 38 to look new...told them it needs to stay as is for now....I have too many irons in the fire to paint another vehicle this summer lol.

I cut up and cut down a front Dana 44 to be the right track width and bolt in place of the stock axle and make use if the stocknsteering and suspension. I then used a ford 303 tranny and dana 20 t-case. And finally I couldn't find a non cracked flathead at the time so used a ford 200 six that I built up with flat tops and a custom ground cam. The winter road salt are up what was left of the body pretty bad so I decided to tear it all down and redo it 10 weeks ago... (had to quit work when covid closed my girls school....I initially worked on the 38 but decided to do the f1 as well once I had the 38 far along).

Re: I picked up a cheap 38 standard and put it on the road.
Well looking like the model a chassis that donated the 39 hydraulic brakes may eventually get a new life...
I got a call out of the blue to come get some A parts cheap...... Well I got a dismantled steel top 31 cab... and a poor 30 coupe that was cut up with an axe.... I loosely assembled the cab and threw it on the frame.....and a friend Gave me a free turing engine..... so I have the starts of a model a truck for a couple hundred bucks.

Looks like the girls are onboard with this new project. Sounds like the 30 coupe was worked on by the same guy that put hydraulic brake pedals in my 37, the hole looks like it was cut with an axe.

Re: I picked up a cheap 38 standard and put it on the road.
Took another long drive in the 38 this weekend and it ran great even in the HOT weather and the long drive back up the mountain to home..... didnt have to fix or adjust anything!!!
I did change the oil again.....been trying to change it often. To drain any of the old sludge that may have lossened up from the engine sitting.

Re: I picked up a cheap 38 standard and put it on the road.
I haven't had to touch the mechanicals at all this fall other than changing oil.... but we have been driving it a lot so I did have to put new rear tires on since the old snow tires I had on it wore down pretty quick.
I rented out the car for a vintage mariage photoshoot for a magazine. We took it on a short fall vacation this year to some 1940s cabins on route 30. And also used it to get our Christmas tree. So far it has been a very enjoyable car!!

Re: I picked up a cheap 38 standard and put it on the road.
great story, but the "girls" have to name the car, as it is a member of the family and should stay in the family. Long time ago I taught my sons to drive straight drive in a 40 sedan, they still remind me of it all the time.

The guys keep calling it "the 38" so no actual name as of yet.... I have let the 11 year old mess around with driving a standard in the driveway. And both girls I have shown how to drive our model t's as well. I started acquiring more parts for next years machine I want to build (the 31 pickup) I have been buisy fixing other folks old cars... so the only personal car repair I did recently was replacing the bad engine in our 72 van... I did a little work to it internally (stoked, balanced, and roller cam) to give it more power on the mountains. And decided to go a little further with aluminum heads. But glad I got that done with.. what a pain to do!!! I was going to just redo the old 302 stock but figured If I have to do such a pain of a swap with thr AC and power steeing and no room. I may as well make it get out of its own way. My green f1 that I just redid got to be in some photo shoots this winter as well.. one for family Christmas photos. Which they gave us a few shots of us with it. Lastly. Since I shared some music before.. here is a chistmas song we wrote with the kids and recorded.. https://youtu.be/ITfnhll32GI

Great job on the '38! Is this your truck? I had them as my wallpaper for a long time. Hoods are different but I can't believe there are that many 4x4 51 - 52's around, especially with the green/black paint scheme.

I originally had a rusty 51 hood on it that I replaced with a better 52 hood.

Outstanding what you''ve done with the family, must be that mid Western Pa atmosphire that I enjoyed for years in Meyersdale at the family farm. Good luck.

Thanks, it is actually a late series 2a... so a few diferneve from a series 3. It is a great vehicle, my wife's favorite to drive. Has a rover diesel and fairy overdrive... so can actually get up to 63 mph. But takes a long time to get there and is loud being all aluminum. It gets 27 mpg so is out most efficient vehicle we have!!!

And thanks again for all the nice remarks... I try to introduce our kids to as much as we can... I also do my best to help out any other folks in the community if they have an interest in old cars..
I love seeing old cars on the road, so try to keep as many road worthy for myself as well as others..... I am known around here as the tall guy who is always driving old cars...lol.
