Good points mentioned by Mart, and i would like to add:
When performing boring, honing and valve seat grinding/cutting functions, a horizontal deck helps to maintain concentricity of the tooling to the bores and seats. Every bit counts.

Likely, you are talking about the Clayborne engine stands like the model shown below which Mart also mentioned. Note the tool sitting atop the horizontal deck surface. DD

Just using the highly calibrated Mk I Eyeball, it appears as though the line of rotation is the camshaft, correct? Since the forward mount is open wide enough for the timing gear to fit I assume it would be pulled straight out.
