Default Speedo cable

I have a 31 with the round Stewart Warner Speedo. (I believe) I would like to change to the oval Speedo. I would like to have the the capability to have the trip mileage just to make life easier on tours. I know I have to change the dash to except the oval Speedo. The question I have is the cable different?

The round speedo cable will attach to and work on the oval speedo.
But the Oval Speedo Dash Panel will not work on the Round Speedo gas tank. They are very different.

As MAG said, the gas tanks are different and the oval dash will not fit where a round dash was. The speedo cable is no problem to change, but the gas tank is a big deal to change.

Okay I understand the 29-29 gas tanks are different from the 30-31. But I’ve seen the 1930s with a oval Speedo. Isn’t the 1930 and early 31 have the same gas tanks?

The late 30 and early 31 gas tank are the same. The early 30 is different . There were 3 different tanks in the 30-31 series.

The cables for the oval and round speedometers are not interchangeable. If i remember correctly the diameter of the square end at the speedometer head is a different size. You might have to add material to the inner cable to make everything fit correctly.

The square end on the round faced cable is .104, on the oval face it is .124". A small end in an oval speedo may work for a while, but will soon round off the corners and spin out. The drive end of the cable is also different, ovals have a round shaft with a flag, whereas the round type is .104" square.

Yep, as the guys said, it would be a tough deal to swap. Much better to keep it stock and write the miles in a small notebook.

Also GPS is great for telling speed and miles, but none that I know of keep track of trip miles.

Yep I see Tom. You are absolutely right. I’m going to leave it stock, and write the miles down. Like the saying goes (that we have heard before) leave it alone

I have two early1930 model cars and they both have the early 30 gas tanks that used the 28 29 speedo panels. If you want that oval speedo bad enough you could change gas tanks. Everything else about the tank is the same except the shape of the area where the speedo panel fits.
