The main advantage to LEDs is their longevity; they last much longer than the 100 hours you can expect from incandescent bulbs, which also dim with age. The plug-in replacement LED bulbs come in several intensities, figure lumens = CP x 12.5, approximately. The bright white "color temperature" also appears brighter than the yellowish filament light. AC/DC types eliminate concern of correct polarity.

For cowl/park, the height limit is about 1-1/2 inches; the ones I found are too bright without a series resistor.

I put a set of 12 volt LED brake lights on the back of my Town Sedan that were meant for a trailer.
I made simple mounts and clamped them to the bumper.

I then got a sealed 6 to 12 volt transformer on eBay for about $6 and attached it one of the mounts.
I just made sure that I got the polarity correct for the LEDs.
