Is my head NG???
Distributor started to screech a bit on a cold start; when warm noise stopped; took distributor out and found the head eroded? Also, the distributor coupling eroding as well. Will this be OK or is the head trash??

You pic won't enlarge/isn't large enough for my old and worn eyes . However, from what I can see.....TYPICAL of that area in a used/old engine, because of heating/cooling cycles AND due to possible past water leaks/condensation from oil pan areas. Remedy: I'd pull that rod out and start with a new rod. Clean/vacuum rust out of area best as can. When re-installing, use never seize and coat ever thing that you can see , including rod and dist connection areas. Don't be afraid to smear it on good, eh |

Re: Is my head NG???
What you are seeing has nothing to do with the head. I would suggest getting a good repair manual if you don't have one so you understand how things go together. The screech could be from dry distributor shaft bushings. Have you oiled them lately? 2X hardtimes remedy advice.

Yes, looks like it was just corrosion build up that looked like a broken shoulder in the head, surprised to see that much corrosion as the distributer was installed only 2 years ago in a clean bore

Re: Is my head NG???
Two years ago I removed my distributor and head. I installed the distributor and lower shaft about 12 years before that and I was surprised at the amount of rust that had formed. When I reinstalled the head and distributor a few weeks ago I coated all the surfaces with anti-seize.

Re: Is my head NG???
That corroded away area is just the head gasket, which had a small hole, to center the shaft, when putting in the distributor. If you just wiggle it around a bit, it'll go in OK.
