Every good flathead deserves a chance!
Just sitting here looking at my 1940 flathead torn down on the engine stand and thinking about what a buddy said the other day, "whatcha going to put that one in", my answer "I have no idea" but I'm going to build it anyway. I'm a firm believer that every good flathead deserves to be put back into service. I might never use it, might sell it, but at least it will be up and running again, instead of rusting away in some dark corner of the garage.
And who knows, I might come across a project just begging for a fresh flathead. |

Re: Every good flathead deserves a chance!
Same here Ralph,
I just picked up a rusty old 59AB that looked so poorly sitting in the dirt that I brought it home. Although I've never had one apart, I hope to make this one spin again. It's stuck right now, so it's got MMO on all the bolts and in the cylinders.

Its such a shame the flathead has a bad reputation for cracked blocks, it makes them hard to sell.

Ralph, I'm doing the same thing. 52 8ba, bored only .020, crank 10-10, a real stock flathead with no car to put it in. It's more fun than shoveling snow!! Maybe something will show up begging for an engine.

Re: Every good flathead deserves a chance!
You guys are making me feel bad. I have four flatheads that need built. Two that are torn down, cleaned and magged and two that I need to tear down. I certainly don't NEED them as I don't have anything to put them in but, you never know what might come along. My wife tells people that I have at least one more pickup laying around just in parts. It's not true, I don't have a frame or cab.

Now that is the spirit!
And you know how it goes . . . one 'gateway part' can cause you to build a whole darn car. Once you get the flathead built, then you'll just HAVE TO find something to put it in! Best of luck! |

Re: Every good flathead deserves a chance!
My AV8 started as just an engine. It must have been magnetized, because before I could bat an eye, all these parts just magically appeared in my shed, all laid out around the engine and calling to me to assemble them......

If anyone asks you "why", smile, let a little drool drip from the corner of your mouth and answer "just cuz". If they don't give you a supportive nod they will probably never understand.

Re: Every good flathead deserves a chance!
I got eight 8BA's waiting their turn. Of course some will end up as "lawn art", but I hope some are good. Like somebody on here says " Never get rid of nothin" !!!!!!!....... Mark
