31 dash panel black recommendations on paint and how to do it?
The areas on the round speedo dash that need a black paint.
What paint was it, that is satin, flat, gloss? What paint is good to use today? How it is best done? Thanks. |

Kevin when I rebuild the speedometer with panels I use a flat paint. the bast is to lay the spot out with tape and cover the reset of the panel with paper. Then spray the spot you wish to be black. Let it dry and remove the tape.

I read that the panels were sprayed using a mask (not tape), so the edges were slightly fuzzy.

Never tried this, but why not use extra wide sticky masking tape applied tightly over the areas to be painted, then, using a sharp Exacto knife, carefully cut the tape parts out where the paint lines are.
Would use the black rattle can but in a semi-gloss mix.

Re: 31 dash panel black recommendations on paint and how to do it?
I use a small plastic bottle that was for dropping ink into hand stamps, etc. Has about a 1/32" hole at the tapered tip. Fill with thinned flat or semi gloss enamel and let it flow into the cavities. It will self level with dash on horiz. surface. A medicine dropper with a very small orifice can work as well. If too large, use a glue gun to fill orifice and poke with large needle.
No need to mask, etc. Takes a little practice to get the correct paint consistency but mistakes are easily corrected without masking, etc.. Last edited by duke36; 03-18-2017 at 12:15 AM. |

I agree with Larry that semi-flat black would be closer to the correct black than flat black.
