An oil cap on a Model A must surely be vented. A while back a friend sold a Model A to a guy who knew nothing about Model A's. He went to the local hot rod store and bought a bunch of nonsense stuff, including a non-vented oil filler cap. A few hours later he came to my friends house with oil pouring out the rear main like an open water spigot. We felt obligated to determine the problem. We dropped the pan expecting to find the return pipe had fallen out. It was intact and it was open. We removed the rear main cap and found the Babbitt was intact. We reinstalled the pan and when we went to put in new oil we discovered the unvented cap. We replaced it with a vented cap and the problem went away.

People have been known to put a Brillo pad in the cap thinking it will allow it to breath and prevent fumes from escaping. Bad idea!

It looks like something that was handy and put to use. Go get the proper cap.

yeah . ive never seen an oil cap that looked like it. i think someone must have put it on trying to seal the blowbye in the motor but created a bigger problem for themselves.

until i can get to G moirs i have a breathable soup can on it.

The oil and gas filler caps MUST be vented. Get a Model A oil filler cap from one of the Model A parts distributors. You may consider getting the kit that direct the oil mist under the floor board. This will take car of any oil smell while driving and keeps the engine clean.
