Someone already mentioned this---Smitty mufflers get MUCH louder after a healthy engine blasts thru them for a month or so. Mine were good, initially, but are VERY annoying on a long drive after "burning-out".

If you crave a nice sweet mellow tone, install a gutted muffler.

I use Red's headers and Brockman steel packed Mellow Tones on four of my Flatheads. If you call Brockman's and let them know what kind of sound you want, they will build you a set...

Talked to Brockman today and affirmed that they will not do 1.75 in/outlet. Said he runs 17" steel packs on his flathead. If anyone comes up with a video I'd like to hear what they sound like. One short video demonstrates at idle sound but not at RPM..... I'm starting with 1.75 straight pipes and stock log pickup manifolds.......

My '47 which spent the majority of its life in CA has its original CI manifolds and the typical '50s exhaust pipe conversion kit for dual exhausts. It has the smaller 1-1/2 inch pipes.

It has its original Smithy mufflers from those days and although they don't rattle any windows they have a nice "bark" when the engine's under load.

Running Red's headers with Headman turbo mufflers. Nice "medium" sound level set-up.

I was cheap and went with a set of Walker Glasspack Mufflers - 24041, on my '40 stake truck, with 1 3/4" tailpipes. After about 5000 miles, I'm still quite pleased. I don't have any drone going down the highway.

I got 18" glass packs on my 53 Victoria with Fenton Cast Iron Headers, took a while them burn in but now sound great, I am hard of hearing, I think they sound great!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we use to pour oil in them so they burn out faster.

Thanks for all the Great Advice! I called Brockman's this morning and ordered a set of 12in. steel packs. Hope I like the sound or I will try something else. So now I have a Brand New Set of Smithy's with less than about 3 minutes on them. If anyone is interested I will make someone a deal on them. Thanks Again from Montana!

Interesting re Straight Pipes - on my 284ci ScOT blown engine the sound was so loud it was unbearable - and I like loud ! So I guess it depends on the way the engine is set up and your individual tolerance for loud.

53 Mercury motor (stock), Red's headers and 1 3/4" diameter straight pipes = perfect sound for me.

That post about brockmans having 1 3/4" in/out just makes me really mad. When I ordered mine the broad( I use the term loosely here) said the smallest they make is 2" in/out so that is what I bought & had to get reducers from the parts store. So much for brockmans for me in the future.

A couple posts up says they do not have them in 1-3/4. On a new muffler I have sawed many inlet or outlets off and welded on a new one to the size I needed. Just finished another early ford chassis with all new pipe and a pair of ford tractor mufflers I changed the ends on. But having your own exhaust pipe bender makes the job easy.

I've had straight pipes, but in my advancing years (68) I find them tiresome on a trip. The one I did really like was a 36 coupe with copper straight pipes.... that sounded very cool, and they glowed at night after a good hard run.
