All cylinder walls are fine . There are signs the head and manifold were removed and replaced

That is a wrist pin retainer - that is not good.

Unless it was simply in there all along. As in it was never discovered when the engine was put together. Jerry, why was this discovered to begin with?

I dropped the pan, pulled the head , the water pump and valve cover and manifold to re-gasket the engine. Valves, cylinder walls and everything else looks good

With the cylinder walls looking good, I wouldn't worry about it.

jerrytocci - with what you have taken apart (as listed in post #4) I SURE WOULD disconnect the rod ends and pull each piston to definitely see if it is missing in your motor!

It surely wouldn't be from his buddy's engine. You were lucky to find these thing before it went blewy.

I put over five hundred miles on this engine before opening it up. How can this clip fall out ?

Maybe some "misplaced" it on assembly but you will never know for sure unless you do as Cape Codder suggests. I think I would just for my peace of mind.

Can you move the pin back and forth without removing the piston to see if a clip is missing? Maybe with needle nose pliers or a hemostat? Perhaps with a home made tool.

I agree with CC. If the engine is still apart I think and if the wrist pin can be seen if the rod is pulled slightly down far enough toward the base to see the pin and not disturb the rings. I'm not sure whether if that can be done on these though.

At some point before reassembly, I will check them one at a time and will post results

Considering the cost of a motor, it's the sensible choice to make.

I have a question. Does the piston travel within the cylinder go low enough to expose the wrist pin retaining clip? My guess is it doesn't. If this is correct then the clip has to be an extra that someone forgot to remove or the pin was incorrectly seated and fell off during installation of the piston.

I was thinking pretty much the same thing. My guess is someone had a clip spring off the pliers and go flying somewhere into the aether. They can fly quite a distance and never be found, most likely because they end up in the most unlikely places, like the sump of another engine being assembled nearby.
If the bores are fine, I'd remove the clip and press on.

You are correct with the stroke not allowing the pin to be exposed. Check out my UPDATE

If there is one missing in the engine I would expect to see score marks on one of the cylinder walls. That's why the retainers are in there, to keep the wrist pin in place.
They're not like the Model T where the wrist pin is clamped in the connecting rod to keep it in place..
