Oh Crap! I found another project...a '50 Club Coupe...am I nuts?
After sharing my fuel injection project with a good friend, who then shared it with his brother, who's neighbor has a '50 Shoebox 2 door in his driveway, and loved what I am doing with the TBI system, said if I wanted another project he would give me a good deal on this....so....just waiting for some pictures as it's a full days drive away...winter....snow...cold.....think it will be a spring purchase but wanted to get your thoughts on the '50 club coupe, cool ride? I sure like the looks of them....maybe another fuel injection system.. ha ha. It's all stock as far as I know, no interior, some dents, bit of rust, needs some floor work, some of the glass is cracked...it's a rolling car with 3 speed but comes with a 4spd top loader...
More later, dinner bell is going off. Cheers

No your not nuts, go for it. My first car in 1964 was a ‘50 2 door sedan that my Dad purchased for $5.00 from a co-worker.

My favorite body style of the shoebox models, aside from the wagons. My dad was a pipe smoker, so that was a common sight to me. Imagine what it did to his lungs, not pretty. I say go for it if you have the space.

As you can see, I am partial to "shoebox" coupes.
I hope you enjoy yours as I have mine over the last 35 years. |

restored a coupe - very few parts available because the coupe is "one" of a kind. Some parts are hard to come by. 36fordguy

Re: Oh Crap! I found another project...a '50 Club Coupe...am I nuts?
Thanks guys for all the positive feedback...I'm buying it, it's a 10 hour return trip in good weather so since we have lots of snow on the ground and highways we have decided to hold off until spring. I may send the money and get the paperwork so I can start the reg search process, it sometimes can take a few months.
Yes, I have 20 acres so lots of room to add projects.. I was going to ask about parts, as there is no interior with it, and some of the glass is cracked but from what I understand it's flat glass (except maybe the back window) so I should be able to have it made locally. The interior is the big ticket item to find...or build... or ??? I'm not worried about body work, I love doing it and whatever rust is in it I can weld in new sheet metal, but he says it's in pretty good shape body wise. It is column shift 3 spd but comes with a 4 spd top loader. I'm not sure how I want to build this car, a classic cruiser or make it a real sleeper with a hot engine and such. My '49 F-1 with fuel injected flathead is my current cruiser (once it's on the road) so a cool hot rod might be fun. Your thoughts? Cheers

Re: Oh Crap! I found another project...a '50 Club Coupe...am I nuts?
Since you asked about our thoughts..... I am probably the only one here that thinks a T-9 (toploader) crash box would be cool in a shoe box. I like that tranny and I like oddball stuff. Because of the work I do, I like a chev suburban for my daily driver. Enclosed/full sheets of plywood, side doors for tools.....The one I had before this had an sm465 granny low 4 speed. I always buy govt surplus stuff. Anyways just saying I love a trans with a granny low.

GB, you aren't totally unique in this, I once bought a 50 four door parts car that the previous owner had used for his daily driver. He installed a T9 so he could tow heavy trailers with the car. It wasn't a pretty install with the different type throw-out bearing arm setup from what the cars came with, but he made it work. The car also had a bullet hole in the roof from where he was hunting and forgot to account for the height difference between his scope and the barrel. |

Re: Oh Crap! I found another project...a '50 Club Coupe...am I nuts?
It's hard to tell what will be needed except obviously the floor. It's a project for sure but could be fun if that's what you're looking for. I did my bodywork over 10 years ago now but a lot of parts were/are available including rockers (inner and outer), floors, fender and quarter panel bottoms, etc. Have you decided to buy it? If you scroll to the end of this album you can see some of the common rust areas on shoeboxes:
