Default Model A Speedometers

I am new to this forum so this is my first post.

I live in Fallbrook, California., and I have a Model A Speedometer that needs to be cleaned and oiled.

Any suggestions to where I can have this done?

Thank you,

Welcome, Les. There are speedo rebuilders listed at the top of this forum in the "stickies" section, and they're all good and reasonably priced. Send it off to one of them. Your won't be disappointed.

Hi Les,
Is it making noise? If so it could be your speedometer cable and not the speedometer. Fairly simple to remove the cable assembly and pull out the inner cable and lube it. Might save you some bucks.

Welcome to the forum.

Welcome. Also make sure the cable doesn't have any sharp bends or kinks in the cable. Someone installed the first cable clamp into the lower frame rail on my car, and the cable was almost riding on the muffler. I moved the clamp to the hole in the upper frame rail, and removed and lubed the inside cable, and it's been fine for 10 years.

Welcome to the Fordbarn, great place for finding stuff. As to the speedometer, try turning the input where the cable goes in with the tips of your fingers. If it does not turn easily, it is too tight and in need of service. The green grease that Stewart Warner put in there 85+ years ago has turned to concrete. Also the pot metal that the framework is made of expands over time and gets tight on the shaft that runs through it What happens is that the odometer rolls up the next 1000 or 10000 miles and has to turn another row of numbers that haven't moved in decades, this adds extra stress to the drive system and twists the cable off. I have restored over 1000 of these and can help you with a variety of options.

And DON'T try using WD-40 to lube anything inside the speedometer.
It does bad things to potmetal, and it isn't meant to be a lubricant anyway.
