4 Blade Fan Removal (Solved)

Hey guy's,

I have a brand new aluminum 2 blade fan i want to put on the car but it seem's I'm having trouble removing my 4 blade fan, it just doesn't want to release. I cant use my 3 jaw pullers, so what's the trick?

Iv'e tried rubber mallet, wood block and ball peen and straight ball peen and it's just straight up laughing at me.

I would use the fan remover nut sold by the suppliers. Sit with the pump between your knees with the fan resting on your legs. Remove the castle nut and install the remover, thread it most of the way leaving about an eighth inch of clearance. Smack the remover sharply with a ball peen hammer, this should release the fan from the taper.

a good whack with a heavy hammer has always released mine . heat/cold/thermal shock/penetrating oil ?

I rested the pulley backside on a pair or sawhorses (or maybe trimmed boards to clear the water pump), protected the pump from falling to the floor, unscrewed the nut a few turns, then used a hammer and brass punch on the shaft end.

I agree what Dave, John, and Bruce said. What I did was take the nut off the impeller and turn it around. That way you have a solid surface to bang away on and won't ruin the points on the castle nut. Always works for me.

Well, the pump is still on the car radiator is out. Iv'e turned the nut around and screwed in another screw lone enough to be touching the end of the shaft. Iv'e hit it on the end with a hammer a couple of wack's, but it still on there. I'm not sure if hitting on the end of the shaft will cause the pump shaft to be damaged or damage to the pump or bearing surfaces. I have added BP Blaster to the shat. Nut's off, fans stuck on.

Doe's the pump need to be removed or can the pump still be installed to take the fan off?

You need to remove the pump from the car. As previous comments noted, place the pump loosen on a vise, between your knees, sawhorse, etc. I removed a stuck four blade fan last week with the fan remover nut, as 31 Vicky mentioned above, by placing the pump/fan assembly loosely in a vice and one good whack with a heavy hammer and it was free. There was no damage to the pump shaft. Keep in mind that the threads on the pump shaft have to be protected. You will never get that old fan off if your pump is still on the engine.

Okay, I was unsure if it needed to come off or not. I was hoping to not remove it as past history on other cars has been, If the cooling system doesn't leak, leave it alone. I just spent month's and 4 trips to the radiator shop getting my radiator all sealed up. The last time, ... I finally had him completely disassemble the radiator rod it out and reassemble it. It works perfect now $350 later.

Pump will be coming off. Wouldn't you know it, it's the one gasket I didn't get, ...

Just make your own water pump gasket with gasket paper. Use the cylinder head water pump opening as a pattern. With a small ball peen hammer, first tap out the bolt pattern and cut out the bolt holes. Then align the gasket paper over the mounting plate on the head and tap out the pattern over the edges of where the pump mounts. Hope this is clear? Takes 15 minutes and you will end up with a perfect fit.

I've never had to remove the water pump to remove the fan if the radiator was removed . I use the knock off tool and it does take a reasonably hard blow with a heavy enough hammer to do the job .

Removed water pump and placed the fan between the knee's method worked perfect, ... 3 sharp blow's did the trick.

Hitting it while still in the car sounds like a good way to break the web that the end rides on out or fracture it.

Has anyone tried: remove the cotter pin from the fan nut, loosen the nut a 1/2 turn or so, put a new cotter pin in and run it for a while to see if that will loosen the fan? Just speculating.

That sounds like a great idea, but in my case the car was already being disassembled in preparation to do my front seal before I bought the 2 bladed fan.

I see know reason as to why it wouldn't. I think I'd be tempted to use the thickest cotter pin I could fit in the hole or a bent steel nail. I sure would hate to send the fan flying.

Remove the pump from the engine, the nut from the kingpin wedge will screw on to the pump shaft,lay the fan across your knees and give the nut a whack,don't miss! The blade will come off !

Yesterday the pump was removed and the fan was removed using that method.
