Paging Mitch RE: waking up that sleeping engine
Mitch, I am aware that some timing gears had the dimple in the wrong place, but have never seen one. If that were the case, was there another mark to get the proper indexing to the crank gear? If not, it must have been trial and error to index it.
I am trying to do my homework before Miles and I head off to Arlington tomorrow to get that DeLuxe Roadster back on-line. I totally agree with you that something is funky if he had to change the rotor 180 out to match up to the timing pin. For those observers who are interested, here is my usual process on waking a sleeping motor: 1) change oil, last QT down dizzy hole of course 2) set points to .020 3) time it (this is no doubt the sticking point in this case) 4) check for spark by manually opening/closing points ( he has spark) 5) check flow of gas from carb (he has flow) 6) with battery as charged as it can be, use load tester to check for battery health 7) spin starter with key off to check for starter drag (having my induction ammeter close by in case) 8) compression check (he could have stuck valves, too) If all this checks out the engine has no choice but to start

MITCH HERE COME IN,,
lets see where it lays on comp stroke.. i recently saw a cam gear with another divot drilled in it for some reason so the owner re set the rotor according to the wrong one.... i also pulled the timing gear inspection cover to look at things Last edited by Mitch//pa; 07-14-2014 at 01:29 PM. |
