Yea it is all due to new parts being made from different materials today and guys not understanding the different expansion rates
you can not use new materials with old book spec,s

A little crocus cloth and a little elbow grease and it can be good as new!

I worked on an engine in which all 4 pistons were wiped out in one mile of engine pinging due to the spark timing being too advanced. This is one of the better pistons. The pinging damaged the ring lands as well as the piston crown, and the rings were pinched tight in the grooves. Notice that damage from pinging starts at the top of the piston, while Tbird's picture of too tight of piston clearance starts at the skirt. A split skirt piston can survive a little better from tight piston clearance.
