There are two types, one the element on the end screws out of the black body, the other you have to replace the element and the black body. From year to year, only the knob changed and it screws into the other end of the black body. So 35 thru 48 Ford are basically the same.

Check the website that JM 35 Sedan reportted on here on this forum. it's on today's first page still.

You'll need to modify the knob you get from Caerpenter, as the element takes a screw mount. Caution, this is not an automatic element, you need to guess when to pull it out or you fry the wiring. Ask me how I know.

I have some NOS Knob and Element assemblies, 81A-701638-A, which consists of both the KNOB and the ELEMENT/HOLDER. There were two styles of elements: one by CUNO which threaded into a black plastic HOLDER and, thus, was replaceable; and one by CASCO which had the element pressed into the HOLDER and was not replaceable. Both styles functioned the same, and both HOLDERS were threaded internally to accept the same 1938 Knob.
I think the 1938-39 Ford Restoration Book by the V-8 Club shows this lighter, as does the 1938 version of Ford's Hardware Trimming & Supply Book.
