Stewart Warner gauge rebuild

2 questions. Picked up a pair of vintage 270 degree sweep 2" SW mechanical water temp temp gauges for the hot rod at Hershey. 1 needs a new temp sensor thermocouple.

1. Anyone have experience with a rebuilder on older SW gauges ?

2. Where do you find the brass 3/8 pipe to SW thermocouple adapter that fits in the flathead head ?

The sender is I think a 1/4 inch pipe thread and a normal pipe adapter should be all you need.
And by the way, the sender is basically a temperature dependent resistor and not a thermocouple which is a different animal.

Having the temp sensor replaced on a mechanical gauge is very expensive.
But, North Hollywood Speedometer does them.

Oops, missed the fact that these are mechanical gauges. If you Google "bourdon tube repair", there is some repair info there.

I wanted SW gauges for a pickup. Not wings but old style. IMHO Stewart Warner has deteriorated since they were sold a while back. I ended up with several gauges before I found everything I needed. In my "collection" I have an old mechanical water temp unit I did not use. If you need any reference information PM me and I will try to help. I used this gauge when I did the cam break in and it works fine. I hooked it up in conjunction with a toggled electric unit to verify the reading and then took it off and put it back in the box. I believe the gauge line is filled with some type of transfer medium and if a leak occurs the gauge will not read correctly or at all.

They can also get you the adapter nut for the head. Or your local NAPA can get the adapter as well. It's not just a pipe-threaded bushing, as there is a seat for the guage's bulb to sit against.
